AN: This is based on the song X&Y from Coldplay's fabulous new album. Are we allowed to put song lyrics into a fic? Somewhere I heard we weren't but I'm not sure and it's so much better w/ them. Anywho, look up the song, it's beauteous!
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter
Something was wrong. She wasn't quite sure what it was, but something was bothering her. She couldn't sleep, she forgot about assignments, the thought of food made her nauseous. And it all had to do with him. Something had caught a hold of her and wouldn't let go.
They became friends by chance. It just so happened that around the same time that Draco decided rebelling against his father just for the sake of rebelling was his "chosen path", Hermione Granger had entered his world in a way that he had never thought imaginable. She as beautiful and driven, he was lost and confused; and without him even wanting her to, she was beginning to change him. Hermione saw it every day, Draco was scared. And so was she.
But it wasn't just a scared-of-the-dark kind of scared. They feared for the future because they knew that their friendship was in limbo. And something had to be done.
Deep inside, she knew that they could easily be happy. Their problems could be solved and their confusion would cease. But it wasn't that easy.
That was where something was wrong. The friendship that Hermione had felt so confident about was suddenly messy and cloudy.
She couldn't go on being just his friend.
"Draco"
Her voice cracked as she said his name, but only she noticed.
"Oh…Hermione…hi," he said casually looking up from his papers which fluttered in the wind that was cascading off of the lake. His back rested comfortably on the trunk of a large elm tree. "Something wrong?" he asked.
She knew that he didn't have to ask. He felt it too.
"You know." she answered boldly. There was a long pause as Hermione glanced out towards the trees that lined the beach. "Nothing is normal any more."
Draco cut in quickly, "I don't understand." He said quietly.
But as Hermione glared down on him, he stopped and shook his head. "Why does it have to be this way?" He asked rhetorically.
"For so long, I've enjoyed getting to know you. I enjoyed learning your expressions, your tones, your personality…but now, something has stopped…we've hit a rut like some old married couple…and we aren't even…involved." She said, chuckling as she stared down towards the sandy grass.
"Why do you have to ruin it?" he asked. But he wasn't angry, he sounded sad and full of regret.
She ignored his question. "It may seem okay now, but we're only heading for disaster…we have to make a decision."
"Hermione?" Draco asked.
"Yes," She answered, still not looking towards him.
"I have loved being your friend…" he stated. It seemed at first, like an irrelevant and random comment, but as her eyes came up to meet his, she knew exactly what he meant.
"I've enjoyed being yours, too." She said as she felt a tear prick in the corner of her eye.
A decision had been made…for the better. And that was what she told herself as she gazed turned out and they stared at the lake in silence.
"I'll miss seeing you, Draco." She murmured softly as she turned towards the castle and slowly walked away.
AN: Short, I know, but I had to get it out and this is how it flowed. Please review and let me know what you think!
