Chapter 1: Strange encounter

Kaley was walking along an old street in London. She was just about to turn down another street to her home when she heard a faint cry. She stopped and listened. The sound was coming from a sack that was stuffed in between two old barrels. She walked over, not quit sure if she wanted to free what was inside it.

"What are you doing near my shop you violet eyed thief!" an angry voice yelled. Kaley spun around. It was the butcher, Mr. Glish. He was running towards her, waving his hands as if she was a bird that would soon take flight. Kaley reached out and grabbed the sack. She turned around and ran for her house that was already in sight.

When Kaley reached her house she was out of breath. She quietly stalked up to her room so her Aunt Thesa would not hear her. Aunt Thesa was a cruel and vicious person. She hated having Kaley live at her house and tormented her whenever possible. When locked into the safeness of her dirty room, Kaley glanced at the sack.

Suddenly, a loud cry was admitted to the room. The sack started to writhe around on the floor. She jumped up onto the bed as the sack started to crawl towards her. Kaley gathered what courage she had and opened the sack. To her amazement, a small kitten came screaming out of the sack. She picked it up and it immediately stopped crying and looked at her with big eyes. Kaley gasped and had to restrain herself from dropping the kitten.

"You, You have violet eyes! Eyes like mine!" she managed to say. And sure enough, the kitten looks back at her with deep purple eyes.

"People tease me and insult me because of my eyes. Is that why they abandoned you?" she questioned the kitten quietly. But the kitten took no interest in this and curled up for a nap.

"Kaley!" a hoarse and angry voice yelled, "Come down here and do the chores and make us dinner!" Kaley sighed she had better do what Aunt Thesa said.

"I will be lucky if I don't get grounded for the fifth time this week." The kitten stared at her. "Not that I didn't do anything. She just does it for no reason."

"NOW!" yelled the angry voice.

"Oh all right, don't set your wig on fire you hot-head!" yelled Kaley. "What? Why can't I do it back?" said Kaley when the kitten looked reproachfully at her. Kaley sighed and stumbled down the stairs for another night with Aunt Thesa.
