Rory walked into the Diner, she had just come from her mom's. She looked around, all the seats were taken accept the second one closest to the cash register.
"So… Luke?" Rory asked shyly, after seating down.
Luke looked up. "Yeah?" he said, pouring her a cup of coffee.
"…."
"Yeah?" Luke repeated.
"…."
Luke looked at Rory. It looked like she was silently fighting with herself. He didn't know what to say so he went back to taking people's orders and getting coffee. Luke figured if she had something to say, she would do it on her own time.
Rory sat down, still trying to find the right words. "Umm.. You know how you and my mom dated?" she asked, with her head down.
Luke looked at her, "Yeah?"
"And you know how the town loved you two together?" Rory asked, with her head down, still.
"Yeah?" Luke asked, suddenly really unsure where this conversation was going.
Rory lifted her head up, "And I'm never in my life seen my mom happier than she was with you. And that's saying something! Because in Lorelei Gilmore's life, I assure you, there has been lots of fun," Rory finished with a laugh. Finally, a smile set on her face. "And…now she is really sad…. Not sad like the paste she ate gave her a tummies ache. But like…when your heart gets ripped out and a kiss on the head and a Barbie band-aid can't fix it."
Luke took a moment to really look at Rory. She had rings around her eyes and you could tell she didn't have a good night's sleep. "You okay?" Luke asked, getting the urge to give Rory a hug or at least give her a pat on the back.
Rory stared, starting to get frustrated. "Yes. But I also know one person that is not."
Luke got the hint. "How bad is she?"
"Worst than the time she left you the message on your machine and was so ashamed that she snuck in your house and got it," Rory said, almost ashamed that she couldn't help her mom more.
"Oh."
Rory glared, "Yes."
Luke looked around; there were a lot of people staring at the two of them. He had a sudden urge to strangle everybody in the room. (But really, how different is that?) And then he looked back at Rory, giving her a hard look, he let his head down in shame. "I'm sorry," he whispered.
"Not as sorry as you are if you aren't going to do something about it!" Rory said, getting rather heated. Gone was a cute little girl and in came a bull ready to fight for her mom.
Luke look startled but he grabbed his coat and started out the door.
"And you better be going because you really want to and not because your afraid of little ole' innocent Rory!" she yelled.
Luke turned around, and said quietly, letting the whole room know how serious he was, "I love your mom, Rory. I loved her from the moment she came into this town and from every moment on. I am deeply ashamed of how I have acted this pass few months. I have no excuse and yet I still want her." Here he paused, there was so much emotion swirling in his head and he didn't know how to let it out. "..I know I don't deserve her. She deserves so much and I have so little. But Rory, I promise, to you and this town, that I will try my hardest. I love Lorelei Gilmore!" the end was finished a little loudly, letting the whole dinner know.
At this point Rory had tears in her eyes but managed to get a few words out, "Well go get her then!" she huffed.
Luke didn't even answer, he was already out the door.
