Ballot

Veronica's stomach was tied into the tightest knots as she walked into her polling place. She was nearly sick from the tension in her body.

She knew her father wasn't going to win. She knew Vinnie Van Lowe was going to take her father's job. She knew her one, measly vote was not going to make a difference in the results of the election.

But did any of that matter?

No, it didn't matter.

To her, casting her ballot—even if she was the only person who voted for Keith Mars—made a huge difference. Voting for him said she would stand by him, even in his darkest hour. And that's what mattered.

As she walked out, the tension began to ease out of her body. She felt sad and angry and guilty, but she would stay strong. She would stand behind her Dad, even if she was the only one, because that's the way it had always been. The two of them together could face the world, and they would make it through this. She could feel it deep within her, even when the future looked bleak.
