Red Light

I've been running forever. Darkness. That's all I've seen for the last hour. Behind me. In front of me. In me. Does anything even exist? Of course. That's why I was brought to this town. This place of lower conscience. And mine? It drug me here. My suppressed feelings resulting from what happened. And from the death. And now? I need out. Running. I'm tired, but no. I need to find it. It? Something to help me out. But wait! Ahead. It's...it's...that red pyramid thing. I'm sure of it! I can hear the scraping. Slow now. Slow. My light off? Of course, I turned it off hours ago to conserve the battery. For some reason this impenetrable darkness lets me see through it. Steady now. And there! Several feet ahead! His huge body is lumbering on. His knife is being drug behind him. He hasn't noticed me. I wouldn't notice me either if I had a huge helmet upon my head. Now I sneak to the left, to a ladder. Quietly. Quietly. Good. Up the ladder now. Good. And down the dark hall. But then I hear the gurgling. Gun loaded. The smell. The sick. Bang. A thump. Bang! More gurgling. BANG! Silence. I am alone again. So down the next hall. Left. Right. Right. Left. Where am I going? Wait! Another ladder. And down I go. Splash. Water. Splash...some thing's in here with me. Bang. No more splashing. Tromp. Tromp. Tromp. Ladder. Up. And across the hall. Down. Clang. Or clack. Metal. Grating. Monsters nipping at my feet through the holes. Don't scream. Don't squeak. Just run. Run! WAIT! A door...

Open it? Yes. It's surprisingly quiet. And there is a red light. And on the table...the Great Knife. Pyramid Head must be in here. And another door! A groan. A victim? The door is partly open. Push. Careful. Push. Legs over a bed. Mirrors along a wall. A small hallway. Creep. Creep. Pause. Peer around the corner. Pyramid Head is the one sitting on the bed. Carefully he removes his helmet. Another groan. Is he hurt? Was it me? A deep breath. His back is to me. He bends over, head in his hands. And he groans. He's still. I take a step forward. A sharp intake of breath. The monster looks at me. No, not monster. The man. The man? How can he be...? He stares. I stare. What do I do? His eyes grow wide. He turns away. He fumbles to put the helmet back on. "No," I command. He hisses and continues. "No," I repeat. Listen to me! It's back on. He stands up. The monster. He takes a step. And another. He walks slow, although he isn't even dragging the knife. A hand outstretches. It grabs my throat. My gun. I grab it. Bang. In the neck. He falters. He bends over, arms slowly flailing. Composure. Regained. He stands perfectly erect. Still. I put my gun away. He is still. I take a step forward. Then another. Before I know it, I'm in front of him. He is still. Planning? Not sure. I reach a hand out. He falters and jumps back. He lunges. Pushes me against a wall. I grab onto his apron. He growls. The nose of the pyramid is right by my face. I squeal. I can sense him smirking under the metal. I feel a hand around my throat. No air. I grab the helmet. He stiffens. I fumble with it. He tightens his hold. I lift it off. A face. He releases me. I stare into those black eyes. Those brown eyes. I smile. I touch his chest. His breathing increases and he trembles. I tremble. He lifts a hand to my face. He softly touches it. I sigh. Then I scream. In my gut. There is a screwdriver in my gut. I fall to the floor. Where did he go? I see a sparkle. A glimmer. The Great Knife. It slices through me. Clank. It meets the floor. Darkness. No more red light.
