Waiting
A Kingdom Hearts Story
"Kairi.. come on! You haven't hung out with us for, like," Selphie took a pause, flipped chesnut hair blowing in the slight breeze. The sunset shone before them calmly, resulting in them forcing to shield their eyes. "A thousand years!"
"More like a year." Kairi giggled. She smiled, but her deep blue irises were far off somewhere.
Her maroon hair was still short; but now long enough to be tied into a small ponytail. She neglected styling it anyways, letting the thin strands of hair blow around her face.
"And besides," She stared off into the distance at the island, which was now rarely visited, and if so only to play a friendly game of hide and seek. "He promised-"
"He won't be back for a while, Kairi," Selphie interrupted. "I can promise you that."
"Maybe he will!" Kairi persisted, free hand balling into a fist.
"You don't know if he'll... ever come back."
"He promised." She whispered this. It was, of course, something sacred, his oath to return. She slipped her hand into her pocket, remembering the papercut she got before giving her good luck charm to him. She didn't tell him, of course. He always worried about her.
"Kairi.." She said this reluctantly, as if wanting to say something that would break her heart, but quickly changed the subject. ".. Pleeeeaaasee?"
In response, the teen laughed. "You see enough of me at school. He told me he would come back, so I have to wait for him-" She glanced at the island again. "-them.. every second I'm not busy."
"Kai-"
"See you at school tomorrow, Selphie." She smiled casually, and walked in the direction of the border.
Selphie sighed, and walked away.
Kairi soon reached the border of the island, for once Selphie turned her back she broke off in a sprint. She smiled at the raft built by the three friends. It never broke down once after the islands were restored. She boarded it, and was soon taken to the island.
Daintily she stepped off of the planks and onto the sandy shores. She glanced around, clasped her hands behind her back and reminisced, if you will.
As she wandered through the island, overgrown brush, treehouses, and all, she recited it to the waters, calmly whispering to her as the wind rushed over it. It felt like forever since she came up with the first line, even though it was simply three days. She smiled, and chuckled when she realized how much was missing from herself once she returned.
"Thinking of you, wherever you are." She mouthed the words.
"We pray for our sorrows to end, and hope that our hearts can blend.. Now I will step forward to realize this wish." Her voice grew louder, and soon she was yelling it out to the skies.
"And who knows:
Maybe starting a new journey won't be so hard.. or maybe, even, it's already begun." Tears blocked her sight, tears of hope, and sorrow, and love.
"There are many worlds.."
She realized how foolish she was acting, and broke off, slumping down to the sand.
She whispered the line, a single tear falling.
"But they share the same sky."
She smiled.
"One sky.. one destiny." And she sat there, waiting.
