'Colonel, come in.' General Hammond waved in his 2IC, and replaced the receiver. As he took a seat opposite the General, Colonel O'Neill nervously went over the hundreds of reasons he could have been called into the office. Why was it that whenever the General sent for him out of the blue he felt like a school kid being called in by the principal?
'Sir, if this has something to do with my report I promise I'll have it written by.'
Laughing the General interrupted him 'No, Jack, it's nothing like that. I've actually come to ask you a favour'.
Sighing in relief Jack relaxed his grip on the arms of his chair.
'That was Kayla' Hammond nodded to indicate the phone, 'she's been given the lead in her school Nativity'.
'Sweet, baby Jesus, that's some role; not many lines, but hell, you get all the attention.'
The General gave him a look before continuing. 'Colonel, she's playing the Virgin Mary.'
'Course she is.' Jack nodded and hid a grin as he noted how proud George looked; no doubt his granddaughter had been equally proud at being given the role.
'Unfortunately I can't be there, the President..'
'Government business and all that?' Jack finished for him. The General nodded and sighed.
'It can't be avoided I'm afraid, which brings me to the favour I wanted to ask. Kayla is very excited and as I can't make it I was wondering if you wouldn't mind going, I know she'd love to see you again.'
'George I don't think I'm much of a replacement but I'd be delighted to go.'
The General stood and smiled.
'Thank you Jack, now if you'll excuse me.'
He waved his hand at the piles of reports stacked on his desk. Jack smiled; he was glad not to have all that paperwork. As he was about to leave, the General called after him, 'And Jack, feel free to take some of the others with you.'
Laughing, Jack quipped, 'Sure, it'll do Carter good to get out of her lab this Christmas.'
