Shiny Things

A/N- This is the result of another challenge with NikNaz93. Prompts were 'TV' & 'Tree'. The word limit was 500 and I was one under haha.

Balthazar stretched his arms skywards, the arms of his suit moving to show his bare wrists. He yawned and willed for the Television set to turn on. It did and displayed some old, down run day time soap. He was hiding out in hotels until Castiel decided to give up trying to recover those relics that he'd acquired. He didn't want to harm the guy. After all, he was family. And Raphael happened to follow him last time. That was not a fight he wanted to relive. He wasn't that sure how he escaped the first time.

The commercials played lazily and he gazed out of the second store window. There was a tree there. Its leaves were green and luscious just as his Father had intended it to be during the summer months. He rubbed distantly at his wrists. He removed his jacket and tossed it on top of the bed before opening the window.

He got a strong breeze in his face and heard the birds singing like they always did. In all the time he'd spent on Earth, he had never taken the time to actually sit back and think at how wonderful it was. It was odd. He had never agreed with Lucifer. The planet didn't deserve being destroyed. His older brother was indeed just a kid throwing a tantrum.

He saw that there were a couple of nests buried within the branches of the tree. None of the birds were present within them. By this time the chicks would have left the nest and fending for themselves. He rubbed absently at the bottoms of his sleeves. They were hanging loose after he lost his sterling silver cufflinks in a skirmish with a demon the other night.

He sighed and let the sun bathe his face for a few moments.

When he looked back down he saw something glitter within one of the twiggy nests. He squinted. There were two small slivers of bright metal hidden deep within them. He pouted and wondered if they could be what he thought they were.

He began to climb out of the window. It wasn't long before he was perched on the window sill eyeing the nearest branch. He couldn't 'magic' the metal pieces over before he knew what they were.

He manoeuvred his way onto the branch and shuffled forwards making sure that he wasn't going to ruin his suit.

A few moments later he'd reached the nest and seen that they were his cufflinks. He reached out for them when a magpie when and perched itself on top of them. It looked at him curiously. Its dark eyes blinked rarely.

"Get out of the way you beaky kleptomaniac!"

It squawked at him and flapped its wings viciously. There was no way that bird was moving. He swiped out with a hand only to have the bird attack him.

He snapped his fingers and the bird vanished with a poof of black feathers. Balthazar got his cufflinks.
