The music played quietly in the background of the small town club. Cigarette smoke cast the room in a hazy glow. Patrons spoke loudly to each other as they enjoyed a refreshing drink. Men sat at the bar yelling and laughing as the bartender kept up a steady supply of drinks. Couples stood on the dance floor swaying to the soft tunes. Some men, boys really, sat in the booths trying to woo some girls on a first, second, or third date. Still more people stood around playing a game of pool. Through the haze and among the many bar patrons, sat a lone woman. She sat at the bar with a glass of water in her hand. The ice had since melted in her glass as she sat. Her fur coat sat on the stool beside her, saving the seat for her companion. She took another tentative sip of her water as she looked at the club's wooden door. Her date was late, and she was willing him to walk through the door with a smile on his handsome face. She glanced at the clock that hung crooked on the wall. It was seven oh five. She sighed and began to tap her foot nervously. She wanted, no needed him to come through those doors. If he didn't… she didn't know what she would do. The woman sighed and rested her head on the dirty table top. She stayed that way until a hand came to rest on her slim shoulder. She shot up only to stop when she found her face to be a mere inch away from two ice blue eyes and a smile that could shame the purest of clouds. Peggy gasped and wrapped her porcelain arms around the man who had just walked in. The young man reciprocated and she felt his strong hand settle on her sweet spot. She giggled like a school girl, not knowing what else to do with her overflowing emotions. She felt his grip loosen as he swung his sturdy frame into the seat beside her. He motioned for the bartender to bring him a glass of water also, though his eyes never left Peggy's. For a few seconds, neither one spoke. They just smiled at each other. Finally, Peggy broke the comfortable silence.
"Do you have it?" Captain Steve Rogers smiled and nodded his head, his golden tresses bobbing up and down.
"Yeah, Peggy. I got it." As he spoke he slid a small box forward. Inside was the gift that the 107th was to give Colonel Philips. Peggy was relieved because she forgot to get the Colonel a gift and she would have been in unofficial trouble if she didn't give a gift. Peggy smiled and slid it in her pocket. The two looked around the bar in a comfortable silence. Peggy caught the good Captain watching the couples on the dancefloor. Peggy smiled.
"Still haven't learned to dance I take it?" Steve blushed a dark crimson.
"No, not yet."
"Want me to teach you?" Peggy tried to hide her hopefulness from her voice, but a bit shown through.
"Not yet, Peg. Maybe some other time. I have a mission starting tomorrow. Though, I might be free this Saturday." Peggy smiled at the Captain. One day, she thought to herself as Steve walked her out of the Stork Club, we'll dance. With that thought, the lovers walked back to their tents in the pale moonlight.
