Chapter 1-

A dark shadow silhouetted against the charcoal grey sky. The shadow thrashed, sweeping its long arm along the surface of the still water, a dull spray rose from the water upon contact. Several shapes also flew from the sea screaming, these shapes were significantly smaller than the great shadow in the sea. "You have failed me Scubamon! You assured me that the barriers would have been broken down sufficiently to release the virus by now." The shapes hit the surface of the water with a thud, the kind of noise that is only caused when something hits water at an extremely high speed. The smaller shapes –Scubamon- returned to the larger shadow, "We beg your forgiveness Master. We will have the barriers broken soon enough." They sounded terrified of their 'Master'.

"See to it that it is done soon, or else." With that warning, the shadow melted back into the surface of the water. Small ripples were created in the water as the Scubamon returned to the coast to their cave in which they worked to complete their masters plans.

A brunette girl shifted and moaned in her sleep, she awoke from her troubled sleep and rubbed her head. This girl was Hikari 'Kari' Kamiya; Kari had been suffering from these dreams for the past few months. She assumed that it was due to her traumatic experiences in the dark world two years previously, but they were all so vivid it made her uneasy. It had been two years since the defeat of MaloMyotismon; she was now 16 years old, just like TK, Davis, Yolei and Ken. Cody had just turned 14. The original Digidestined are all 18 now, except for Izzy who is 17 and Joe who is almost 20.

The world was now aware of digimon, but many people feared them, MaloMyotismon had caused widespread prejudice and discrimination against digimon, it was not a majority view, but many people felt this way and made life difficult for digimon in the real world. The number of Digidestined has been gradually increasing over the past two years; however all of them had the original digivices, not the D-3 model. Soon after MaloMyotismon's defeat the original Digidestined's digivices had transformed into the new D-3 model, meaning they could access the Digiworld.

Kari leaned over the side of her bed to check her roommate Kasumi was still in the bed below her. Since digimon had become more prominent in the real world, the Digimon Academy had been established to help the new Digidestined adapt to their new responsibilities. Kasumi was new, her digivice hadn't even presented itself yet, and although her egg had left the computer it was yet to hatch only when the egg hatched would her digivice present itself. It had been weeks though; it's as if the digimon was waiting for something. Kasumi herself had pale cinnamon coloured hair and tanned skin which complimented her teal eyes perfectly. Kari could see why the boys had gone crazy for her when she had joined the academy.

Kari lay back down on her bed and sighed, her own digimon, Gatomon, snoozed peacefully next to her. The dreams she had troubled her, they felt so real. What if they're not dreams? She pondered, the thought terrified her. She was the child of light, but she was terrified of the dark world, how pathetic is that? She pushed the thoughts to the side and rolled over, hoping to get some sleep before her school day tomorrow.

In the past two years, TK had returned to his old name, Takeru. He sat in his first lesson eagerly taking notes, Davis watched on with a look of confusion, wondering why anyone who had experienced it all first hand would want to take notes. But Takeru did, he clearly wanted to make sure he was in the teachers 'good books'. All of the Digidestined had enrolled in the academy, except for Mimi who had enrolled in the academy's New York counterpart. The maroon haired teen instead turned his attention to Kasumi Hytaou, the girl had joined about a month ago and was similar to Takeru, in that she was attentive and active within class. Kasumi sat with Kari. Davis wondered what he had thought he saw in Kari before, not that there was anything wrong with her. But since MaloMyotismon's defeat he and her had become closer and they were more like siblings than anything else. Kasumi on the other hand was hot. At 16, Davis' hormones were going crazy and Kasumi was exactly the sort of girl they went crazy over. He stared at her without her knowledge, happily observing her beauty. "Mr. Motomiya, if you would care to take your eyes off Ms. Hytaou," Davis turned quickly to the front, a blush quickly spreading over his face, a stern man with receding grey hair and a thin frame stood in front of him, "Could you answer the question?"

Davis began sweating, Kasumi was staring at him, "Uhm, could you repeat the question please sir?" The whole class snickered at him behind their hands,

"I asked you to explain the role a crest has in digivolution."

Davis sighed in relief, he knew this one, "A crest is the physical representation of the most prominent characteristic of a Digidestined's personality. They are used to access higher levels of digivolution, without a crest a digimon cannot surpass the Champion level. However with it, it can also access the Ultimate and sometimes Mega levels of digivolution." Davis smirked and leaned back in his chair, feeling rather proud of himself. That is, until Kasumi raised her hand and added "Surely crests have an impact of armour digivolving? I mean, you need a digiegg to armour digivolve, a digiegg is a manifestation of a particular crest, isn't it?"

Their teacher, Mr. Sato, nodded and smiled at Kasumi, "That is correct Kasumi. Davis your answer would have gained you some marks but not all of them, to fully comprehend the role of crests you must look at the ability to armour digivolve." Davis blushed in embarrassment.

Yolei sniggered at the back of the class; she sat with another new kid, Luca Alcheri. The academy was constantly getting new students, as many new Digidestined presented themselves. Luca had blond hair styled so that it stood up on his head, he reminded her of Matt. He was so style conscious, his digiegg sat on the desk next to him. "Yolei, its mean to laugh at Davis behind his back." Her digimon Hawkmon reprimanded her; he crossed his arms across his chest and gave her a stern look. Luca stared at them in awe; she was the perfect example of partner and digimon perfectly suited to each other. They got on amazingly, but were what the other needed, Hawkmon calmed Yolei down, but Yolei made Hawkmon more easy going.

They left the classroom after the lesson and walked to the auditorium for afternoon assembly. They all sat on benches that rose up, a desk at the front was lowered so that everyone could see it. The original Digidestined all sat together except for Davis, Kari and Takeru who all sat with some of their new friends. The three original Digidestined helped the headmaster of the school by making sure the new students were settling in. so they sat with the new students. They had all been at the school about a month. Along the row was Kari, Davis, Takeru, Kasumi, Luca, Luca's sister Lyra Alcheri, who had similar blond hair as her brother except hers was wild and curly, it complimented her pale skin very nicely. Her hazel eyes were in complete contrast to her brother's stormy grey irises. Finally there was Finai 'Finn' Ishio, a boy with jet black hair in contrast with his bright emerald green eyes, framed by thick rimmed glasses, he had a thin frame and his clothes hugged his body closely. Many of the girls in the year saw him as attractive, he had a quirkiness about him that the girls seemed to love, not that he really noticed the attention. They all clutched their digieggs tightly hoping for them to hatch.

The assembly began, Mr. Sato stood in front of the desk and began talking, "Alright, firstly I would like to welcome a new student who received his egg two days ago. I would like to welcome Tydashi Eerika," a boy entered the hall who also looked of a similar age to Takeru and the other Digidestined, he had a muscular frame and tanned skin. His hair was a thick brown mass that swept down over his brow. His hazel eyes swept the hall before he smiled and waved, "Hi, just call me Tyde, its easier." Most students were terrified when they first walk in through that door in front of the entire school.

Kari leaned over and whispered in Takeru's ear, "He reminds me of Tai."

Takeru nodded, "Yeah he just seems confident." Tyde walked and sat on the end of the row, next to Davis. Just as he sat all the eggs along the row began to glow a bright white. All the new kids looked down in shock. Their faces splitting into grins as their new digimon appeared on their laps.

Tyde looked down at a small purple sphere with large folded ears and red eyes, it smiled and spoke "Hello Tyde, I'm your new partner, Pagumon!" the brunette swept it up in its arms and held it out a eye level, "Nice to meet you Pagumon." Pagumon nodded and smiled.

Lyra looked down at her lap to see a green blob with a toothy grin, she whispered under her breath, "Gummymon."

She stared at it in shock before it looked up at her "That's me!" she giggled and the small digimon jumped up onto her shoulder.

Kasumi was already hugging her Budmon tightly. It was a small green sphere with a leafy tail stretching out behind her. The small digimon giggled and rubbed its cheek against Kasumi.

Luca recognized his digimon as a Kapurimon immediately, "Hi Luca, I'm your partner, I've been waiting for you." The small blue ball with a fluffy tail and metal helmet bounced on his knee excitedly, much to the blond's amusement.

Finai had a Hopmon under his arm; it was a tear drop shaped dragon digimon which was blue with yellow markings. He smiled and rubbed its side. The little digimon squirmed free of his grip to escape the tickling sensation.

The students of the academy knew what happened now; they all looked to the sky through the open skylight, to see five stars in the blue sky. Beams of light shot down into the new Digidestined's expectant hands. When the light faded they each held a digivice. But what they didn't expect was for them to be D-3 models. Tyde's had orange grips, Lyra's had teal grips, Kasumi's had peach grips, Luca's had an icy blue grips and Finn's had grey grips. They stared in awe at the D-3 digivices. The students all too busy looking at the new digimon to notice the uncommon digivices.

A bright light filled the auditorium, it focused down on the five new students. Kari rushed and grabbed Kasumi, Davis held on to Tyde and Takeru grabbed Lyra. Tai ran forward from his seat, "Kari, what's happening?"

Takeru's turned, "Tai, they have D-3's! This is something new, get to the Digiworld, qui-" he was cut off by the beam of light which pulled him into the air along with the rest of the Digidestined. This is bad, if new true Digidestined have been selected. Takeru thought, just before the familiar sickening twisting sensation took over his body which he associated with travelling into the Digiworld.

They all landed with a sickening thud in an area of the Digiworld Takeru didn't recognise. The others all lay stunned in the grass. Takeru sat up and made sure his partner Patamon was safe before standing himself. He stretched and cracked his back. He awoke Kari by lightly shaking her, her eyes fluttered open, "I'm going to go look around a bit, protect these guys." He gestured to the others around her before she nodded and shuffled so she could lean against a tree, Gatomon standing next to her alert for danger.

Takeru turned to leave before he heard someone calling his name; Finn had sat up, Hopmon staring at him with concern. "Takeru," the dark haired teen stood shakily, "wait, I wanna come with."

The blond looked at the other boys shaking legs, "Maybe it would be best if you stayed here for a while?"

"No," Finn shook his head, "I have some questions for you anyway."

Takeru looked at him, relenting "Fine, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to answer them."

The pair ambled in silence, both holding their digimon in their arms, Takeru knew that Finn was just trying to stable himself, as he still looked slightly drunk after the rough transition between the real world and the digital world.

The pair stopped at the top of a hill to catch their breath. Takeru wanted to try and work out where they were so he looked for the tallest tree he could find and copied what Tai did when they were first pulled into the Digiworld. He climbed the tree and pulled out a small telescope that used to be Tai's, it had been given to him by the previous leader when the other boy realised Takeru spent a lot more time in the Digiworld than him.

As Takeru surveyed the area he came across something he never wanted to see again. Infinity Mountain. Takeru stared at it in shock, File Island had been reformatted, it wasn't supposed to be here, Infinity Mountain shouldn't exist, but if Infinity Mountain once again existed, what about its inhabitant? The thought of Devimon made Takeru feel sick, he had lost his partner in the final fight against Devimon and he couldn't face that again. The blond quickly scanned the rest of his surroundings, he saw the coast where they had fought Shellmon, he saw the upturned boat where they hid from Meramon; even Toy Town existed still.

Takeru quickly scrambled down from the tree and began to speed back to the others, a confused Finn following him. "Takeru, wait!" the blond turned, he had forgotten the other Digidestined in his fear. "Sorry Finn, but we really have to get back to the others." Finn saw the look in his eyes and nodded; the pair began to jog back to their friends in the forest.

Takeru immediately rushed to Kari as Finn awoke the others. "Kar, this is bad. I looked around and we're on File Island." The previously drowsy girl woke up quickly, "But, Keru that's not possible. File Island was reformatted, wasn't it?"

"Apparently, but this is definitely File Island." Kari had never seen File Island, but she had heard about it from the other Digidestined. Davis approached the pair; they filled him in on their location. "But wasn't File Island held together by black gears?"

Takeru nodded, "Yes, and the only being that could control them was Devimon. I'm worried he might have returned along with the island."

Kari rubbed the terrified blond's arm, "It's going to be okay Keru, if he is, we'll beat him, okay?"

Takeru nodded slightly, "Okay."

Davis spoke up, "So what's the plan then, you know this place better than us Takeru, so you're better qualified to lead."

"Alright, well I think that, presuming its still there, the Yokomon village would be our best option." The pair nodded and turned to the other Digidestined who were slowly waking up.

"Okay team, it looks like we're in a place called File Island. This place was supposedly reconfigured, but its back so be careful. We don't know what to expect." Takeru looked at their worried faces; they clearly didn't think they would ever enter the Digiworld. "Our plan is to travel to the Yokomon village and try and find out what's happening, then we will try to travel over the ocean to find Gennai, hopefully he can shed some light on the situation." The team all gave their consent to the plan and they began walking.

They had been walking for a few hours when Finn approached Takeru, "Hey, can I ask you a few things?"

Takeru suddenly remembered the others request for answers earlier, "Sure, go ahead."

"Okay, well first I have to ask, why do we have D-3 digivices and not normal ones?"

Takeru shrugged, "I honestly don't know, all I can tell you is that the D-3 digivice is more advanced than original digivices and is only given to Digidestined with a purpose within the Digiworld."

Finn nodded, deep in thought, "Okay, I also wanted to know why our eggs waited to hatch until the moment when Tyde sat down on the bench?"

"I can only guess, but I think it means you're the new protectors of the Digiworld, it appears that there is a new threat in the Digiworld which the original Digidestined cannot deal with. So Gennai has chosen new children to help, meaning you guys."

"Okay, I think I get what you mean, final question though, do you really think Gennai even knows what's going on?"

Takeru looked around to make sure the others didn't hear, "I'm not sure, I hope so. But Gennai is…" he paused, searching for the right word, "unpredictable."

Davis walked next to Kasumi, she held her Budmon close to her chest. "So Kasumi, what do you think of all this?" She sighed, she didn't like Davis all that much, he stared at her and made her uncomfortable, but she wasn't going to be rude to him, "I don't know what to think really. On the one hand, it's amazing to have Budmon and be in the Digital World, but on the other hand, it sounds like there is a real threat for us to deal with."

Davis smiled and moved a little closer to her, "Its okay, me, Takeru and Kari have been through this sort of stuff before. I'll protect you."

Kasumi sighed, he was so full of himself, "I'm good without your 'protection'." She responded bluntly ending the conversation before she sped up to talk to Luca.

Lyra and Tyde stood at the back of the group with Kari, "So, do you reckon we'll get crests now that we're in the Digiworld?" Tyde asked hopefully.

Lyra giggled, "That's not how it works, you don't just get a crest if you enter the Digiworld."

Kari nodded, "She's right, look at Davis, he's spent ages in the Digiworld and he's not got a crest." Seeing the disappointed look on Tyde's face she added, "But you never know, you might get your own crest." Tyde seemed to cheer up at that.

The group carried on walking; periodically Takeru would climb a tree to check their progress. They were close to the village when they heard a screaming. It was a deep gargling scream, "Who is that, we have to help them!" Tyde spoke up; the Digidestined began to run towards the scream. As they got closer they heard the crackling sound of fire burning wood. Takeru had a sinking feeling, he thought he knew what was happening, he had heard those screams before.

They came to a cliff in the desert they had been walking in, looking down at the remains of the Yokomon village, the small huts were all burning to ashes as a flaming humanoid creature –Meramon- showered flames down upon their straw huts. Takeru sprang to action, "Kari, Davis, time to digivolve!" The other two nodded, in unison they all called out "Digi-Armour Energize!"

"Veemon armour digivolve to… Flamedramon, the fire of courage!" A blue lizard stood in Veemon's place; he had plates on his body decorated with flames. Long blades extended from his hands and feet as well as a horn on his head.

Gatomon armour digivolve to… Nefertimon, the angel of light!" A white sphinx cat stood now in Gatomon's space, she had large wings and giant claws that made her look especially threatening.

"Patamon armour digivolve to… Pegasusmon, the flying hope!" a golden pegasus with a white mane and gold plated legs appeared and took flight.

The two flying digimon glided down to Meramon while Flamedramon slid down the cliff face. They began attacking the flaming digimon as the others climbed down the small cliff face. The Digidestined reached the ground and watched the fight, the digimon of hope and light joined together in a Golden Noose attack, to try and contain Meramon, as Flamedramon used his Fire Rocket attack on him. But it all failed. Meramon broke free of the golden thread and showered the three digimon with sparks.

Nefertimon shot towards Meramon and sent rubies at him using her Rosetta Stone attack. The Meramon was weakened but seemed to have resilience to the digimon, he was stronger than the last time Takeru had fought him. A well placed attack from Meramon sent Nefertimon flying; she hit a small hut and returned to Gatomon. Kari rushed forwards but was held back by Davis as the fight still continued, Pegasusmon used a similar attack to Nefertimon called Star Shower, which proved ineffective. Meramon turned and punched Pegasusmon hard, causing him to return to his rookie form, Patamon. This left only Flamedramon, who was now struggling to land a hit against the fiery opponent. Meramon kept ducking under the others attacks and then landing attacks of his own. This eventually left Flamedramon too tired to carry on, he collapsed and returned to his rookie form.

At this point the in training digimon all jumped away from their partners, they charged at the champion digimon, fully prepared to die for their partners. The small digimon all blew bubbles at Meramon, who still seemed to be at his full energy. He sent out a shower of sparks against the small digimon. They all shot backwards.

Tyde spoke up, "Pagumon, you can do this, I believe in you!"

Now Finn added, "We need you Hopmon,"

Kasumi then added, "Budmon, please get up, I need you!"

Lyra added, "Gummymon, Don't give up!"

Finally Luca added, "Kapurimon, put this digimon in his place!"

At their words of encouragement the digimon began to glow, Pagumon spoke, "Hey, guys I feel weird."

Before anyone could respond the process began, "Pagumon digivolve to… Gazimon!" A purple rabbit creature now stood poised for battle, fangs bared and claws out.

"Hopmon digivolve to… Monodramon!" a blue dragon now stood in Hopmon's place; he had drill like claws and finned arms.

"Budmon digivolve to… Floramon!" a green creature with violet flowers extending from her arms and red petals draped over her head now stood in Budmon's place, empowered for battle.

"Gummymon digivolve to… Tapirmon!" a brown and purple creature now floated on the spot, its lower body enveloped in a misty aura.

"Kapurimon digivolve to… Gotsumon!" a rock digimon now stood on the battlefield, it resembled a small child except made up of stones. It had haunting yellow eyes, like lamps in contrast to its dark body.

Takeru smirked, "Your support let them digivolve, a similar thing happened to me when I first entered the Digiworld."

Tyde nodded, "Alright Gazimon, lets take this hothead down!"

The purple rabbit nodded, "You got it Tyde," he turned his attention back to Meramon "Electric Stun Blast!" a gas shot from Gazimon's mouth that stunned his opponent, it was unable to move.

Monodramon stepped forward, "This is for you Finai, Beat Knuckle!" its clawed hands clenched and the small dragon hit Meramon's chest with enough force that a black gear shot from hi back.

"Destroy it, quickly!"

"Rock Fist!" Gotsumon released a number of rocks from its palms; it hit the black gear which shattered in mid air.

The newly digivolved rookies ran back to their partners, who all bent down and hugged them. Floramon spoke up, "Your belief in us made us digivolve, you knew we could defeat Meramon, so we had to make sure we did."

Kasumi continued to hug her digimon, "Floramon, you all did amazingly, you're so much stronger than I expected!"

Takeru nudged Kari, "How come our digivolved digimon couldn't remove that black gear but their rookie digimon could? It doesn't make sense."

Kari shrugged, "I dunno, maybe that's why they were selected, not us. But the bigger question is what was that black gear doing there in the first place?" Takeru murmured something unintelligible in response.

A small pink digimon with a flower on its head appeared from behind one of the ruins, Takeru, Kari and Davis were all nursing their sick digimon. "Thank you for saving me." The small digimon spoke up,

Takeru took notice, "That's fine Yokomon, It's our responsibility. Where are the other villagers?"

The pink digimon turned away, "They're… gone." Kari looked horror struck, Meramon had killed them, she looked over at the now unconscious fiery digimon. She picked up the small ball and held it as it cried.

Eventually Yokomon calmed down to fill in the Digidestined. "It started a few months ago, things started changing, first it was little things like a new stream appearing, but then all of a sudden File Island reappeared and all the old parts of it were lifted and joined together from other areas in the Digiworld. We've been stuck here since. All Gennai said was that he was working on a fix. That must be you, the new Digidestined!" she looked so happy, the teens didn't have the heart to tell her that they had no idea how to help. But at least they now knew what was going on. Takeru was also relieved to hear that Devimon hadn't been seen since File Island was reformed.

The Yokomon soon departed, saying she would seek refuge in another digimon village not far from here. But the rest of the Digidestined decided it would be best to travel to the coast and try and find a way across to Server to try and find out what was happening. So once again began walking, unaware of the real danger they were in.

A/N

Okay so this is my first story, I actually wrote the first few chapters months ago but never uploaded them. so I guess I'll upload them as I write out more. I don't know how good this is, but I would really appreciate some feedback, thanks!
