Mechanical Heart
Preface
"Thank you again!" I shouted out as I left the hospital and stepped out into the summer sunlight. I had just left my regular checkup and now I was on my way to meet my best friend Bess for some ice-cream.
It was a nice day out and there was a zero percent chance of rain. I had checked before I left since it had been raining nonstop for the past few days and I wanted to make sure Bess and I didn't have to run anywhere for cover. The sun shone high in the sky and reflected off the windows of the buildings.
Beep beep. Beep beep.
I searched my shorts pockets for my phone and answered the call. "Hello?"
"Hey Caroline! What is taking you so long? Hurry it uuuppppp," Bess complained.
I smiled. Typical Bess, I thought. "Ok, ok. I'll take the shortcut and be there in a bit. See ya." She muttered a response and I hung up. I needed to hurry up so I decided to take the shortcut through the park. I jogged passed the children playing and for a short while a small dog ran next to me. When I reached the end of the park and the beginning of the street I saw Bess waiting at the ice-cream stand. I waved to her as I pressed the crosswalk button and she waved back.
I stood there waiting as the cars went by and I even waited a few seconds after the crossing light came on. That still didn't save me from what was coming though.
As I jogged across the street I started to hear sirens and the screeching sound of tires. I slowed down to look where it was coming from and as I did I found myself looking into the eyes of a man wearing a face mask. He met my eyes and I could see that he was panicked. In his car he tried to turn the wheel but he didn't make it in time and I blacked out.
That was two years ago.
