You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
Prologue
June 20th, 2014
The clock on my nightstand was showing that it was 5 a.m. That's the way I had been waking up on a daily basis for 4 years now. Over the time, the clock lost it's purpose and now it was just a decoration of my minimalist room. I had no more need to set an alarm. Normally, I would get up at 5 a.m. and follow a strict routine: go for a jog, shower, have breakfast, dress up, leave for classes... Yet, today was different. Today was the day of my graduation. I am Edward Cullen and from now on I will officially be a special agent - your guardian or killer, your best friend or worst enemy, an unknown shadow seeking to reveal your secrets and protect or destroy.
I guess I had become a creature of habit. Twenty minutes later I was running through the forest towards a small meadow. I was fond of this quiet, isolated place - it became my sanctuary four years ago when my parents died and I joined the academy. I was two months shy of my fifteenth birthday but no one managed to stop me from wandering around when I had sleepless nights and it was sheer luck that I came across this meadow. Now it was my "go to" place - I ran here every morning, I hid here when I got tired of people, wanted to be alone. Today I came here to do my daily workout but something seemed to trigger the memories of the night my parents died. That still haunted me. I got lost in thought.
I just got back home. It was past 12 o'clock and I was dead on my feet, because that day my basketball team won the championship and the students of our school had organised a party to celebrate our success. I sneaked to my room so as not to wake my parents up. I wasn't afraid that they would be angry at me - my parents were wonderful people that raised me well enough to know what's good and what's wrong. Anyway, I saw them at the game and they trusted me enough to allow me to go partying with my friends. I was about to go to bed when I heard the doorbell ring. I really hoped that it wasn't one of my friends fooling around as I quickly went to open the door.
I opened the door and the sight of a man wearing a black suit caught me off guard. I have never seen the man before but his eyes seemed to be oddly familiar.
" I am Aro Volturi, and you must be Edward Cullen," the man spoke softly and flashed a badge that looked like a police badge " I need to talk to you, Edward"
I had no choice but to let him in - he was alone and didn't seem threatening, I was pretty sure that I would be able to take this older man down if he had any bad intentions. Once seated in the living room, the man spoke again.
"Edward, this may come as a shock to you but earlier this night your parents got into a car accident. Edward, son, both of them died. "
Now I gaped at the man. All I could think about in that moment was that he was lying, that my parents were upstairs, asleep in their bed. I rose up, ran to their bedroom and found myself standing in front of an empty bed. My parents were dead.
I collapsed as memories of their smiling faces flooded me and the man - Aro Volturi - allowed me to mourn.
As the dawn broke, Aro approached me.
"Edward, my employee made sure to organize appropriate funeral, all you need to do is dress up. Of course, we need to discuss your future too."
"What is there to discuss?" I snorted, "you're going to put me up for adoption or something like that, aren't you? "
"Actually, since your parents are dead, I am your legal guardian."
"What? How? W-why" I stuttered .
"I am your grandfather, Edward, Carlisle was my son." I could see it now - those awfully familiar blue eyes were the exact copies of my father's.
Then I was told a story about a young overachiever Aro who sacrificed his family - beloved pregnant wife. He chose to pursue his career of a special agent but he always looked after his wife, his son, his son's family, me. Once he heard about the tragic accident, he boarded a private plane. Aro knew that I was a good student, an athlete so he didn't hesitate to offer me a scholarship in the most prestigious school for special agents - the Ephraim Black Academy.
I stopped that train of thought. I didn't want to relive what was coming next - the funeral of my parents.
"Today should be a happy day, Carlisle and Esme would be proud of me," I told myself, "My grandfather was."
Soon enough I was back in my room preparing for the ceremony. When the time came, I made my way towards the Meyer Hall. 4 years ago about 40 of us started studying the principles of being an agent, now only 14 will receive their diploma and credentials. To tell you the truth, I wasn't certain if I would be able finish the course too. It was tiring and difficult since each agent must be athletic and skilled in martial arts, be able to work with state of the art technologies, understand human psychology and physiology, speak at least 4 foreign languages fluently and obey strict rules. Yet, now I was waiting for the moment they will call me and acknowledge my hard work.
Once I was on stage, my grandfather - the headmaster of the Ephraim Black Academy - gave me a diploma, a small package and a warm smile.
"Edward Anthony Cullen, son," Aro said and I knew just very few people in that hall knew the meaning of those words to me and him,"you are a graduate of the Ephraim Black Academy now. Protect our secret and use the skills you learned here to protect the good from evil."
Yes, I was a special agent.
AN:
Hello,
I hope you enjoyed the first chapter of my first story. Please, review and don't be shy to criticise. Also, I would be very happy if you pointed out my grammar, spelling, punctuation or other language related mistakes. English is not my mother tongue and I am sorry if my mistakes offend or anger you in any way. I am willing to improve my writing skills.
By the way, I plan to continue writing, this is not a one-shot and I already know what I want to do with my characters.
Read and Review
Love,
