A Tragic Loss
(a Severus and Lily fanfiction)

Chapter One

Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witch-Craft and Wizardry, just happened to be having a business meeting in the Hog's Head inn on a cold, misty night. He had been looking for a particular person, to teach a magical subject called Divination at his school, although he had never liked the subject. However, first he had to make sure that she was good enough to take the post.

This particular person he was interviewing was the great-great-granddaughter of the very famous Seer, Cassandra Trelawney. However, Dumbledore did not think that she would be suitable for the post, as she hadn't really inherited Cassandra's powers to tell and predict the future.

Just as Dumbledore turned to leave, he heard a hoarse, harsh voice, not in the slightest bit like Sybill Trelawney's dramatic whisper. He whipped round, his deep purple robes flying behind him, and to his amazement, the voice was issuing from Sybill Trelawney's mouth.

" The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have powers the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other, for neither can live while the other survives... "

Dumbledore knew what all of this meant, and understood that Sybill would not remember any of her prediction, as it was a real one. He was just about to offer her job at Hogwarts, when... BANG! The door burst open and Severus Snape, who was also teaching at Hogwarts, came tumbling in along with a short man with small watery eyes. They had nosily been listening at the keyhole hole of the door, not wanting to be seen nor heard, and they had heard the prediction up to the point of which it said the parent will have thrice defied him.

Snape knew what he must do at once, whether it got him sacked from Hogwarts or not, that didn't matter. He knew where his duties lay and whom he respected, and he ran out of the room leaving the short man standing there, shock still, and dissapparated as soon as he was out of sight.

It was extremely hard finding his master, as he was in hiding somewhere he had not told anyone, including Severus Snape, but eventually Severus managed to find him.

"Well?" said Voldemort silkily, as soon as Snape had reached him. He was very skilled at Legilimency so he knew Snape was coming.
