I know, I know, I'm meant to be writing chapter three to A Soldier's Pledge... But my mind is absolutely stuck, and I think I might rewrite the chapter (again)... So here's a cruddy short thing I came up with the other day n.nu

Disclaimer: I don't own a single wisp of Ed's braid, let alone the rest of him or FMA -cries-

There is no such thing as love at first sight, so Roy Mustang believed. Lust at first sight, that he knew of certainly. But it was neither love nor lust that Roy felt when he first laid eyes on the Fullmetal Alchemist.

The 11-year-old boy had been lying in bed, bandages around his chest and missing limb. But his expression had not been pained nor weak. The young Elric had stared up at the Lieutenant Colonel with sharp golden eyes, a fierce determination in those bright golden orbs. Roy was shamed to remember thinking how he would make a great State alchemist.

It was years before Roy realized, knew, that he was in love. He still doesn't remember when exactly it first hit him, when their slowly developing friendship had suddenly changed to mean a lot more to him.

But he does remember the moment he knew Edward Elric had reciprocated his feelings, whatever they were. Lingering looks, hands brushing briefly, less arguing and softened expressions… They were all hints of the emotions that were growing between the two famous alchemists. And when, one day, their hands had brushed past ever so slowly, the silence between them lasting longer than usual, when Edward had clutched Roy's hand suddenly and Roy had gathered him in his arms, when their lips touched, when Ed was laid back on the large office desk, pulling Roy down with him… That was proof.

It was only lust that Roy felt when he first laid hands on Ed, a simple but strong need to be fulfilled. To have the blond's lithe body beneath him, to hear the rasping breaths, to feel the shaking anticipation, it was all because of lust.

But it was love that Roy felt when he had Ed in his arms, pressed against him in a tight embrace. To have the boy's undoubting loyalty, to hear his unspoken trust in their shared silence, to feel the unbreakable bond between them in the beating of their hearts, that was what Roy held on to, the unmistakable feeling of love for and from his one and only, Edward Elric.

Roy knew there is no such thing as love at first sight, but no one could deny feeling something at a glimpse of the blond's beautiful face, and Roy Mustang was the lucky man who woke up to that face every morning.

There is no such thing as love at first sight, but each day when Roy opened his eyes to look down at the peaceful sight of his lover sleeping soundly beside him, lips curved in a smile, he couldn't stop falling in love with Ed all over again.
