"I never thought he would be so... beautiful," Amanda said softly. Sarek leaned in close to his wife and pressed a kiss to her temple, smoothing her hair away from her sweaty forehead. Typically, he would not allow such a display, even though it was acceptable between a married couple. But, the doctors had all gone and they were alone with only their newborn son to witness the affectionate gestures.
Sarek was aware of Amanda's worry, all throughout the pregnancy. She had feared that their son would not be normal, in some way. Hybrids were always questionable. Vulcans were related much closer to Romulans than they were Humans and even Vulcan-Romulan hybrids occasionally were born disfigured somehow. This birth had been unprecedented and even riskier.
He looked down at the tiny infant in her arms, eyes soaking up every detail about the small being, filing it away in his memory banks. His ears were almost rounded, but looked as if someone had pinched them into points. Though they did not have the full pointed effect that was typical of Vulcans, it was not uncommon for a child's ears to be almost rounded up until two years of age. He was sure that, as he developed, the shape would most probably define into a typical point. The baby had a thin wisp of black hair on his head, also typical of Vulcans. It was hard to tell how his facial features would develop, mere hours after his birth, but from his estimations Sarek assumed that their son would have the same sharp, angular face that he did.
There was one aspect that was very human in his appearance, however, and it was brought to the Ambassador's attention again as the infant yawned widely (much to the cooing of his mother) and then blinked up at them. His brown eyes were very human. It was not something that could easily be described in words, but there was a definite humanity in their son's eyes that most Vulcans lacked.
It had been well worth the risk, he decided. Their son was beautiful, just like his mother.
Sarek glanced up, away from his scrutinizing, as he felt Amanda's mind brush his, amusement flicking through their Bond.
You aren't nearly so detached as you pretend to be, my husband.
Sarek looked at her calmly. That is a secret I trust you will keep for me, T'hy'la.
Amanda laughed out loud and turned to kiss her husband, which he returned warmly. When the baby cooed softly, she cradled him a little higher on her breast. "Of course we'll keep Daddy's secret, won't we, Spock?" she said softly.
