ERASE

Rukawa stared up at the broad expanse of his ceiling. The colour, he noted, was quite boring – white all over with tinges of light yellow at the corners due to age. He knew he should be painting it, just like what his mother ordered him to do every summer, yet, he couldn't – he just didn't have the time... just like now.

Time.

It was the one thing he had been obsessed with. It was not on the context that he was always early for all his appointments (though he was always early except for detention); he was obsessed with how little time there was to accomplish his goals in life.

Slowly, he sat up, running a hand through his hair in an effort to calm the tide of frustration that was burgeoning from his chest. It seemed as if he was always trying to catch up to time. He wanted to catch up the time that was lost when he started basketball a little late than his older friends. After all, that small amount of time gave them an edge over him in experience.

That was the case of his obsession with beating Sendoh Akira.

He had always thought that he was one of the best people in the field of High School Basketball, probably not only in Japan but in the world. It was depressing to think that a year's difference in age would mean so much. Between them, Sendoh was, no doubt, the better player. He was not narcissistic to not have acknowledged that, but he was trying his best to capture that capsule of time and work hard to be better than he was.

It was not impossible.

He wished they did not have such gap between them, that he needed not catch up on the time that passed between the day they were born... maybe then, just maybe, they would be competing in skill at the same level of expertise, same level of knowledge... and maybe, just maybe... in attaining the same dream.

He wanted to erase that small period of time... he wanted to, more than anything else.

Rukawa sighed, standing up and slowly walking to where his window stood open. He watched the world go by expressionlessly, eyes bland and just gazing guardedly, as if blindly seeing everything – registering nothing.

After a few moments, his eyes shifted to his watch.

It was time.

Soon, the familiar figure walking two rowdy dogs would materialise from the east, noisily greeting the people passing by... even him. And then he would note how healthy the person seemed, note how sunny the smile was today than it was yesterday.

"Good afternoon, Rukawa-kun!"

There he was, in the middle of the raucous parade, smile brighter than the one he wore yesterday, his precious dogs jumping up and down as if let loose for the fist time.

As usual, he did not acknowledge the greeting openly like normal people would do. All he did was turn away and mutter under his breath.

"Idiot Sendoh."
