Magnus Bane let out a sigh as he walked toward his house. Today was his five-hundredth birthday and apparently everyone had forgotten. Now, Magnus was sure that Alec, his boyfriend, must have been busy fighting demons. However, that gave no excuse for Catarina Loss, Tessa Gray, and Jem Carsairs, a few of his other friends, not to send him a single text wishing him a happy birthday. As Magnus thought of Jem and Tessa, he realized the two of them were finally visiting London again. Magnus assumed that they were making out on a crowded bridge somewhere. Most of all, Magnus was confused about Alec. Had he actually forgotten? Magnus didn't think so. Maybe he had intentionally forgotten! Magnus thought of all of the whispers between Alec, Isabelle, and Jace that had cut of as soon as he walked into the room. The prolonged glances directed at him over a shoulder, the matching smirks on Alec and Jace's faces. As he slowly considered the possibilities he realized that the main possibility was that Alec, Magnus's Alexander, had stopped loving him. Alec being himself would try to make it easy for Magnus, a growing apart sort-of thing. Magnus stopped walking and sunk down against the alley wall. He put his head in his hands and felt a single tear drip down his face, and he cursed himself for being foolish enough to think that he could actually woo one of the nephilim, the angel's own. Damn his stupid part demonic self, his disgusting eyes and lack of a navel. Magnus slowly got up and wiped his eyes, smearing the mascara that had proclaimed itself waterproof. My love life is a cosmic joke, he thought, every time that I think I've found my one and only they leave and I am left, grasping at what I thought was there. As he approached his apartment building his thoughts grew darker, considering why he even lived on this planet if no one ever loved him. Finally, he threw open the door to his loft, just to find if filled with what looked like Christmas lights and every surface was covered in glitter. In the center of the room, perched on the table was a ginormous rainbow cake. Just as his mind registered all this, the room was filled with a chorus of, "SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAGNUS!" In the middle of the room stood Alec, grinning like a maniac. Around him stood all of his friends, from Tessa and Jem to Clary and Jace. As Magnus threw himself into Alec's arms he thought to himself, Ah, this is love.
