Endless Winter

Hatori was trapped in an endless winter, never melting away into the spring that Kana and Tohru dreamt so fondly of.
His life was filled with the cold blizzard of memories and the bitter winds of remorse. He supposed he should be happy that Kana was able to move on and forget him, but whenever he thought of her he would always feel a small twinge sorrow within him. He would think of the happy but fleeting moments he had shared with her and regret ever taking her to Akito to ask permission for her hand in marriage.
He would remember his first time meeting her, "Pleased to meet you. I'm Kana Sohma! I will do my best to assist you!"
He would remember her query, "May I ask you a question? When snow melts, what does it become?"
He would remember his answer, "It becomes water of course."
He would always remember the statement that followed, "Wrong! It becomes Spring!"
And before he knew it, he had definitely fallen in love with her.
Then he would remember her reaction to the fact that he turned into a seahorse, "Waaaterrr! Or sea water?! Which is it Hatori?!"
And when he turned back, "It all makes sense now. I was wondering why you never hold me. You didn't want anyone to know your secret. I understand. You must have been scared. Naturally, you would distance yourself from others. Especially if…it was someone you loved."
And the words that would stay in his heart forever, "But…there's no reason to be scared anymore. Don't push me away. I'm…happy I met you, Hatori. I'm happy that I fell in love with you. I want to be near you."
The words that took her away from him, "If Hatori goes blind, it's your fault! It's your fault! It's your fault! It's your fault! It's your fault…!"
Her parting words, "I couldn't…pro…tect…you… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry!"
His parting words to the unconscious girl, "Thank you…Kana…It's all right now. There's…nothing there to hurt anymore."
And then she appeared. Tohru Honda. When he met her he could see the resemblances right away. The way she smiled, how she treated Kyo, Yuki, and all of the other members of the zodiac, her personality, the list was endless.
Their reactions to his zodiac were the same, "Waterrrrr! S-sea water?! Or fresh water?! Which is it, Hatori-saaan?!"
He gave her the question, "When snow melts, what do you think it becomes?"
And she gave the same answer, "Ah…um, well…hmm. It becomes Spring! No matter how cold it is now, Spring will come again! Without fail."
And now all he could do was make sure she did not befall the same fate as his beloved Kana. He knew his Spring would come again. Without fail.
