A/N So this is a continuation of what will now be "The Senses Collection" I've left "Touch" as uncompleted. I think I might go back and give Emily's thoughts on all of the senses. But each sense will get it's own story. Thank you to everyone who reviewed and favorited "Touch". I hope you enjoy "Smell" as much.
Smell is ironically the weakest sense, but the strongest connection to memory. Smells can take you down roads you've long since forgotten.
He goes down a road, the road not taken. She smells of lavender, just like that first time. She was a young lady then, eager to make her mark on the world. Ready to join the world on her own. Independent. It looked like a brief introduction to the outside world. But to him it was more. It was lightning and fire. A bomb and ice. His world was forever changed. There was no going back.
He's lost in the memories. He has to get back. She's standing in front of him telling him she's there to join the team. He doesn't know what she's talking about. But he can't let this happen. She almost ruined everything the first time. And that was only a brief meeting. A moment in time. He won't survive a million moments in time.
He's brusque. He doesn't want to be. It hurts him more than it hurts her. He sees the momentary flash of pain. He has to be brusque. If he isn't, his world will end, and he doesn't know what that will mean. He doesn't know if he can survive it.
He doesn't know if she'll be on the other side.
JJ interrupts. He has never been happier to see the blonde media liaison in his life. He's never been happier to have a case. He's sorry that someone has died – unbelievably sorry – but right now, it has saved him. And so he escapes. He lives to fight another day.
As he walks to the conference room he wonders what he's going to do now.
The lavender scent haunts him. He can't get rid of it. Everywhere he turns, it's there.
As he walks back towards his office after having caught two killers, he smells it again. His worst fears are realized when she's sitting in his office. He can't deny she's good. He knows fighting to keep her off the team is a losing effort. So he yields. He lays his arms down.
But the smell follows him. And that night as he goes to sleep, it's there. And even his wife's citrus scent can't beat it away.
He knows he's in trouble. What is he going to do now?
