Prologue

Heavy rain fell on the dark streets of Gotham City littering the cold ground with dirty puddles of water, the sun had just gone down. A rather large man drags a lifeless body of a woman through the alley way and leans her up against a dumpster. He removes the thick wool blanket that covers her body revealing a series of stab wounds that were the cause of her demise. Rats scatter around the body shaken from their shelter from the rain. The man steps back and admires his work, blood mixed with the rain runs down her body and forms a tiny stream that travels down the alleyway. Her blond hair matted with blood and sweat hangs in front of her open, lifeless eyes. The man adjusts his raincoat bringing the collar closer to his neck to shield him from the cold raindrops. This mystery stranger reaches deep into his pockets and produces a yellow sheet of writing paper from a legal pad and places it in her cold, rain soaked hand.

The man turns and leaves, before reaching the outskirts of the alleyway he brings his wet fedora closer to his brow to make sure no one can see his face. He stands there for a moment trying to fight the urge to look back and lights a cigarette. When he walks out onto the sidewalk where he is exposed to the people around him walking on the streets he huffs his cigarette and looks one last time down the alleyway. From the sidewalk you can just barely see her feet sticking out from the back of it, he smiles to himself, Tonight, he thought, will be a night to remember. The dark and mysterious man walks away whistling a tune and smoking his cigarette as if he hadn't a care in the world.

An hour later a homeless man is walking down the side walk looking for tin cans and asking for loose change. He pushes his shopping cart along the side walk slowly, his knee is acting up tonight from the weather. He passes a deserted alleyway and sees a promising looking dumpster, he turns and pushes the cart along the alleyway not minding the rats all scattered around the place. He held a place in his heart for rats, after all they weren't that different from him. People were repulsed by him just like rats when all they both really wanted was food and a comfortable place to sleep. He pulled his shopping cart up to the end of the dumpster and lifted the lid, he pulled out an empty ravioli can, checking it to make sure it really was empty and threw it into the cart. After he shuffled the garbage around he found a beer bottle not even opened. He couldn't believe it an unopened beer bottle to him was the equivalent of gold.

So the man opened the turned and opened the bottle and took two big gulps, this was his lucky night. Then the man caught something out the corner of his eye that he hadn't noticed before, it looked like a barefoot. It wasn't entirely uncommon for drunks to pass out in an alleyway in Gotham city and even less uncommon for someone to steal their shoes if they did. So the man looked around the side of the dumpster expecting to see some idiot passed out drunk and soaked to the bone. But when he peered over the edge of the dumpster he almost dropped his beer, there was a naked woman stabbed too many times to count and surely dead. The man turned and pushed his cart down the alleyway quickly, when he got out in the street he knew what he had to do, there was no telling how long the girl had been laying there dead, but he wasn't going to let her lay there much longer. Lucky for him a GCPD officer just happened to be patrolling across the street, the bum hesitated for only a second and flagged the officer down.
