Ange: There's so little of this pairing that it's saddening. So I decided to write for the cause. This is a companion piece to my other HorioTomo fic.

Safety Net
"Se-i-gaku! Se-i-gaku! Show 'em what we got! Se-i-gaku!"
-
Looking around she noticed that her little cheer didn't help any. Why would it? It was match point in their opponent's favor and if they scored then that would be the end for Seigaku.
-
No victory sushi parties.
-
No nationals.
-
No nothing.
-
And that didn't sit well with Tomo.
-
She wouldn't worry though because it was Ryoma playing and he always managed. She shouldn't be worrying even if it wasn't him, Seigaku was just that talented. With Ryoma though she never seen him lose a game so she had her full trust that he'll be able to pull them through.
-
Now if he was only that adept in areas other than tennis as well.
-
Well it's not like she could blame him. He was a boy and a tennis jock to top it off. And everyone knows that boys are dense when it comes to matters of the heart. Being a tennis enthusiast only makes it that more worse.
-
"Ryoma-kun…"
-
Tomo glanced beside her even though she knew without looking who uttered Ryoma's name in such a way. It was Sakuno who stood there with hands clutched around the fence separating them from the tennis court. She had it bad for Ryoma and everyone knew except for the guy of her affections. Tomo knew too but she couldn't give up on Ryoma either. For lack of a better word he was her safety net.
-
Tomo knew he wouldn't see her as anything more than a friend. In the first place she wasn't even his type. She was too loud, unruly, and too much for Ryoma to handle. Maybe she's not fit to be a girlfriend for anyone. She wasn't the typical Japanese girl after all.
-
"Tomo! Did you see that," Horio pointed out to her excitedly, "Ryoma took the ace back and he just scored an advantage point!"
-
"Yea, yea I saw," Tomo replied back at him, "now shush and watch the game. He needs all the concentration he can get."
-
Horio just looked at her oddly before turning his attention back to the game. Tomo knew she was acting weird but she couldn't help it. As much as she loathed to admit it, Horio knew her better than most. They were too alike for him to not be able to. She knew he liked her. She saw the glances when he thought she wasn't looking and the looks of jealousy thrown Ryoma's way. She ignored it though. What else could she do?
-
He wasn't the safety net she needed.
-
Tomo never had a boyfriend before and the thought of going out with someone scared her. With Ryoma she didn't have to worry. He would never look at her the way she wanted. There was no chance of them going out as a couple at all. In fact he would sooner turn gay than look at her as girlfriend potential.
-
So she'll just be content playing the role of his fangirl.
-
With Horio she didn't know how to act around him so they always get into little fights. Those fights always excited her though. Maybe what they say is true and you fight with the people you like. She didn't want to like him though. He was attainable and he really liked her. That never happened before. She's the tomboy that is 'just like one of the guys' at school. She's the one that gets left behind while all her other prettier friends get snatched up by guys that wouldn't even take a second look at her. But Horio did and he still continues to have eyes only for her.
-
And she just didn't know how to deal.
-
Soon she'll have to reality and accept the feelings he had for her. But love is too uncertain. How would she ever be able to manage? Until then she'll have Ryoma though.
-
She'll have her safety net.
A/N: This fails in comparison to my other one I did. And yes I realize she's OOC. Gah, I'm going through an ooc phase and that's not good…
