Agnes had trouble sleeping that night. She tossed and turned in her former atomic bomb bed. She even hugged her unicorn toy tightly. That unicorn meant a lot to her. It was first thing Gru, her adoptive father, had ever given to her personally and also it was what made them a family as after winning the unicorn for her it made Gru appreciate them and soon accept them as his daughters.
Margo and Edith were both fast asleep and instead of interrupting her sisters, Agnes crawled out of bed and went into the hall. The lights were still on, so it meant that Gru was still awake or someone else, although it was usually Gru. Little Agnes, still holding her precious unicorn, continued walking until she reached the living the room.
There she found both Gru and Lucy, her new mother, sitting and watching a movie. Both were laughing as something funny had happened in the film.
"Gru? Lucy?" She called. The couple stopped watching and turned to face the little girl.
"Agnes? What's wrong?" Gru asked, his accent strong.
The black haired girl pouted. "I had a nightmare."
Gru and Lucy exchanged looks. Agnes had always been the baby of the family and even though Lucy had only been their mother for a few months now she loved them as she would her own daughter. Well she was her daughter now. She knew what she signed up for when she agreed to marry Gru. She loved all three girls and seeing one upset hurt her heart.
"Aww. Sweetie what was it about?" She asked getting up from her spot and cradling her in her arms and bringing her back to her seat next to Gru.
"I dreamt we were back in the orphanage because you didn't want us anymore." Agnes buried her face into her unicorn.
Lucy stroked her hair. "There there. We would never send you back to the orphanage." She hugged her.
"You have nothing to worry about Agnes." Gru said. "You're my little girl and I promise I will always be there with you. I'm never going to give you or your sisters up." He moved closer to Lucy holding the young Agnes and hugged them both.
Agnes looked up at both of them to see both were smiling at her. She returned a small smile and held out her pinky. "Pinky promise?"
The two took out their pinkies and wrapped them around her tiny pinky. "Our pinkies promise." Gru smiled.
Agnes giggled. It was silly for her to think they ever would.
"It was only a nightmare." Lucy told her. "And even if they're scary you can always chase them away by pinching yourself like this." She gently pinched her. It wasn't enough to hurt her but it did give her a slight tickled. Agnes laughed.
"Ok time for bed. For real now Agnes." Gru informed and took Agnes from Lucy and carried her back to her room, Lucy following close behind. He laid her onto her bed and stroked her head a few more times.
"Good night Agnes." He said tucking her in and kissing her forehead like he always did when he put them to sleep. Lucy too came to her and kissed her forehead.
"Don't forget to pinch yourself when those big scary nightmares come back." She said in her high voice that made Agnes giggle.
"Night..." She said and hugged her unicorn as they gently shut the door. "Mom and dad." She added before falling asleep smiling, this time a happy dream of their family greeted her.
