As you well know, Hermione and Ron were a very coupleyish couple. (def. Coupleyish adj; meaning to suck face in public and speak baby talk.) And as you also know Snape has a certain disdain for coupleyish couples.
So Snape was able to survive for forty days and forty nights by merely throwing rocks at them. But soon, even that was not enough. After a while he ventured away and stumbled upon a single mother named Belinda with a daughter named Melinda. Both Belinda and Melinda were actually trees.
