A Different Possibility (improved)

Hi guys, I know I haven't written in my story for a long time, but today when I tried to continue it, all I could find was mistakes. That's why I have decided to begin it from the scratch. I hope to do better in this try.

The Beginning

Harry watched around the station with an ever growing amount of weight in his stomach. The Dursleys had already left, laughing at him as they got in to their car. For all intents and purpose it was all part of an extremely strange dream, he was just another orphan living with his crappy relatives. There was no magic, because there just couldn't be something like that; it wasn't possible. Any moment now his dream would end, he thought of pinching himself to wake up but then this had been such a good dream.

In despair he sat down before the wall where his platform was supposed to be. His eyes tracked the time passing by, he was about to doze off when a sound of throat clearing broke his stupor. Getting to his feet, he was about to apologize thinking it was a guard but he was totally wrong. It was a girl, most probably of his own age tapping her foot impatiently.

"Why are you blocking the path, you dimwit" she demanded in a haughty tone

"I am sorry.."

His voice trailed off as he took in the whole scene, the girl was wearing a robe, the kind he witnessed in the diagon- alley. If that wasn't clue enough, the simple fact she carried an owl in a cage was all but screaming in Harry's face.

"You are a witch!" He almost yelled barely managing to keep his voice in check.

"So you are not blind, good to know but you still are blocking my way" the girl however shared none of his enthusiasm, rather her voice was as acidic as she could make it.

"Daphne, calm down" a new voice interrupted her outburst. The voice belonged to a middle-aged man with an air of aristocracy, he carried the heavy trunk of the girl. He looked at the scene before him and focused on Harry.

"What's the matter boy?" He asked kindly, while the girl who could only be his daughter folded her arm and looked around pointedly.

"I am really sorry, sir. I need to get to the platform 9 and 3/4s but I don't know how ?"

"First time going to Hogwarts, I see. Its no matter just watch closely" he said as the girl strode towards to the with purpose...

Harry was stunned, the girl went straight through the concrete wall, it was even stranger than he expected but in hindsight he should have expected this. He went closer, his eyes found nothing to suggest that there was anything besides solid wall but he knew what he saw.

"Go on boy try it, the wall doesn't bite" the man was enjoying his condition, his smile teasing but not in a bad way. Harry took a deep breath, closed his eyes and pushed his trunk on. Every moment he spent was dreadful, always wondering when he will go splat. But he didn't, the wall wasn't there for him, instead of concrete he was greeted with a blast of fresh air.

He was greeted with the sight of another place straight out of story books. It was a platform but not like the modern ones, there was a single board announcing the name of the platform. In the middle ran the train track where a red and gold steam engine rested. On the train was written 'HOGWARTS EXPRESS' this was the train that will carry him to his destiny. He pulled on the heavy trunk even as more people came in. He ignored them for the most part, it was near the middle when he found the empty compartment but the trunk was too heavy to lift.

"Need any help getting the trunk in?" Harry turned around to see the gentleman and his daughter standing behind him. The girl wasted no time in sliding past him into the compartment, while the man simply pulled out his wand and sent both the trunks floating in with a casual flick of his wand.

"Thank you sir, thank you very much" Harry said, he really was impressed by the casual display of magic.

"Cyrus, boy call me Cyrus or Mr. Greengrass if you must"

"I am Harry. Thank you Mr. Greengrass for helping" Harry was at a loss for words, this man had helped him twice in a very short time but he was too overwhelmed to speak anymore.

The train let out another loud whistle releasing smoke, Harry went inside the compartment only to find another girl joining him. The new girl was already nose deep in a book and didn't look up,while Daphne looked out of the window looking at the receding scenery afar. He took his place without disturbing them, silence didn't bother him in fact animosity free silence preferred over being yelled at.

It was nearly fifteen minutes before that silence was broken, Daphne had grown bored of watching the trees a while ago so instead she focused on studying her co-passengers. The boy was slightly on a thinner side, his clothes also not good. All considered she believed him to be from a poor muggle family, no she corrected herself more likely a muggle orphan.

"So just to break the ice, I am Daphne Greengrass and nice to meet you two." She said finally tired of the silence.

"Hermione Granger" the other girl finally closed her book "nice to meet you."

"Harry Potter, nice to meet you as well" Harry thought of hiding his surname for one moment but then discarded it. Lies are never good way to begin a friendship after all.

Daphne was shocked, Harry Potter, the Harry Potter and she just been rude to the hero of all wizarding world. Now that she knew it she could indeed make out the beginning of the famous scar.

"You are Harry Potter? But you look like nothing like books said you would look like?" Hermione's complain however broke her introspection.

"I am in a book?"

Harry was kinda shocked, Hagrid told him he was famous but he didn't expect his name to be in some book

"Oh yes you feature heavily in 'rise and fall of dark lord', 'wizarding Britain and her heroes'." Hermione supplied proudly. She was determined to show that just 'cause she was from non magic parents she was any less than others.

From there the three enjoyed a pleasant time just idly chit-chatting, getting to know each other better. In between they were interrupted once by the lady selling food, free to spend for the first time in life Harry seized the chance with both hands and soon the free seats were stacked with various food items.

Harry had never enjoyed so much, these two girls were the first friends he made and he wasn't about to lose it. Dudley and his posse had ruined his school life so far but now he would enjoy Hogwarts without being hounded.

Soon the train reached the platform, the older students were first to get off the train, eager to reach the school while the first years got out of the train feeling slightly nervous. Harry was feeling intimidated but that feeling disappeared soon as he spotted the huge figure of Hagrid coming their way holding a lantern.

Harry pushed through the ranks of the first years to reach him. Hagrid waved cheerily as he led the first years to the boats, "four in one boat" he announced before settling his bulk in one boat. Harry and the girls were joined by another boy.

"Hi, I am Ron Weasley" he introduced himself, he was the fifth in his family to attend stories of various incidents of Hogwarts kept their nerves from being too stressed and Harry struck an easy friendship with him. The time seemed to flow as the majestic castle of Hogwarts appeared before them, every single part of the castle was beautiful beyond imagination. Harry could hardly believe what he was seeing, never in his wildest dreams did he expect to be in a place like this.

Hagrid led the group of first years to the front doors, the heavy wooden doors were fit to allow giant's entry, with statues of winged dragons guarded the door ways. The keeper of the keys knocked on the door, once, twice he knocked before the doors opened to reveal a middle aged woman of medium height. She wore a black cloak and a pointy witch's hat, her expression made it very clear that she wasn't someone to be crossed.

"Hello Professor McGonagall, here are the first years"

She gave a curt nod and beckoned the first years close. The students filed in behind her, as she told them about the house system and sorting. Harry felt a strange insecurity gnaw in his heart, what if he was rejected, no one wanted him in their teams. In his mind he knew the responsibilities for that could be laid on Dudley, still the fear lingered on.

He stood in queue as Professor McGonagall lead them in to the great hall, it was huge and simply put magical. Thousands of candles hung in the air, the banners of four houses of Hogwarts was displayed. On the furthest left was red and gold lion, beside it was the yellow badger of Hufflepuff, followed by the blue eagle of Ravenclaw and finally the green and silver of a snake.

Underneath the banner students of the respective houses sat patiently waiting for the new students to join them. Watching them didn't ease the fear in Harry but what happened next distracted him. Professor McGonagall brought out an old dusty wizard's hat and placed it on a stool.

Bewildered Harry watched, was it some kind of test, like pulling out a rabbit from the hat. However it was nothing like it,instead the hat turned out to be alive who listed the characteristics the founders valued above all. Four founders, the greatest wizards and witches of their time had come together to build a world for their kind far away from the prying eyes of mundane. Hogwarts was only the beginning of the world from this point ripples had spread around the world, inspired by the magnificent school other wizards powerful enough took the same step. This was the point where the sundering began, two separate worlds came to be.

Harry was still nervous when one by one names were called, the students strode forward sat on the stool and the hat shouted out the house names. He grew attentive when 'Granger Hermione' was called, he wanted to stick to them. He had too few friends to do otherwise. 'Gryfindor' the hat shouted after a few seconds and the brown haired witch went proudly to be in the house of lions, she was followed by Daphne Greengrass. Here was another person who Harry considered friend, inspire of the initial hostile behavior he had come to like her. She wasn't at all that much of hostile when she opened up a little.

Daphne went to the hat, her face was calm but her mind alive with probabilities. Her family was old blood, her parents both wore the mark of the snake but then thirteen years ago they chose the side of the non pure bloods. The wizarding world in general liked to pretend they cared about the muggle borns as well but for them it was just a pretention. She remembered never being invited for parties and never having guests.

So on one hand she could choose to be in house where her family used to belong and try to make a name or on the other hand she could be free of the mask, she could join a house where her family would not be judged only her talent will. As she felt the hat's magic probe her, she tried to make the choice. Magic was all about will power and she was determined to forge her own path.

'A good heart and a cunning mind a delightful combination. Thirst to prove yourself but not in exchange of your morality. A rare and yet fascinating specimen, so where shall I put you'

'Gryffindor' she thought, no questions in her mind which house would accept her best.

"Gryffindor it is" the hat announced.
