The common room was noisier than usual. I sighed and forced myself to stare harder at the words that were becoming a blur. The noise pounded through my skull. I looked over to the fireplace, finding the source of the noise almost immediately. Fred and George were up to their normal antics. My annoyance soon faded and was replaced with laughter. They were doing their usual tricks and charms; I smiled and clapped along with the others. George looked over and caught my eye. I smiled at him, feeling a little trill in my stomach. He walked over and sat in the chair opposite mine. He spoke first You re always studying, come take a break and sit with us. I smiled and looked down at my work. I did want a break. I nodded, Sure. He took my hand in his and led me to the armchairs. I sat in the corner and he sat beside me. I felt awkward, I didn t know these people that well. Except for Ginny, I knew her. I smiled tentatively, she responded with a wide grin. I wondered why George had invited me to sit with them. He was just being nice.
Suddenly I noticed the warmth behind my neck. I realized George had put his hand on the back of the couch, behind my head. He didn t seem aware of it. He didn t mean anything by it. I looked over again, no he didn t mean it. He sensed me looking again and glanced at me. He winked and went back to his animated discussion with Fred. The fire warmed my toes and I moved closer to George, away from the heat. The laughter faded as my eyes struggled to stay open. The next thing I knew I opened my eyes and the sunshine was streaming through the windows. I rubbed my eyes, trying to orient myself. I was still on the couch; someone had put a blanket on me. The fire was out. I looked around, and saw George seated in the chair beside me, his eyes closed, breathing deeply. I walked over and shook his shoulder gently. George, get up. He stirred and I backed away, wondering if I had morning breath. He rubbed his eyes and stretched.
He opened his eyes and finally looked at me. He seemed shocked to see me up and awake. Oh, you re up. You fell asleep on the couch yesterday...you seemed cold so I put the cover on you. Hope you don t mind. He looked at me. I smiled self-consciously No, no. I was warm. Thank you. He stood up and walked to the boy s staircase, tapping my shoulder as he passed me. I'll save you a seat at breakfast? he asked.
Sure.
