The Dream She Didn't Know She Had

Authors Note- Set after S7E12 Where Robin finds out that she is unable to have children.

Hearing a knock on her bedroom door Robin turned her head away from the door and covered her nose and mouth with her hand to stop the horrible sound she was making from being heard from Ted on the other side of the door. She said nothing hoping that he would assume she was asleep and leave her alone. After a few more knocks the door swung open allowing the light from the apartment to brighten her room. Robin quickly turned her face completely into her pillow so that Ted wouldn't see the large amount of tears rolling down her face.

"Robin, it's me, Barney."

Robin had to stop herself from gasping. That was definitely not who she had expected, and definitely not who she wanted to see. Still she kept herself quiet hoping he would leave. But he did not. She heard the click of her door closing and then felt her covers being opened and Barney climbing in beside her. She thought about kicking him out but then he'd know she was awake and make her talk. Talking was something she did not want to do.

Barney shifted up to Robin and put his arm around her. He noticed that she was incredibly cold and shaking wildly despite having two heaters burning inside the room and four extra blankets over her. It took him a few seconds to notice that she was not shaking from the cold but rather from the lack of breath she had from crying.

"Robin I know what's got you this upset and I don't blame you. I have also realized that I actually really wanted this child. Robin, Barney and baby against the world, it would've been perfect."

Robin still said nothing but this time found his hand that was over her stomach and intertwined their fingers.

"It's not as though you lost the child, you weren't pregnant. I know that this is hard, we would've been great parents but we could always try again one day if we wound up together, hell I wouldn't mind. Even if we don't you will still go on and live one awesome life, with an awesome husband and super awesome kids. We all know that you will be the greatest mother, Robin. Any kid would be lucky to have you, it just wasn't your time but it will come."

"Impossible."

It was a quiet mumble that Barney almost couldn't make out. It was the first thing she'd said.

"What do you mean? Robin Sparkles goes mommy, that will be legendary! I can see it already. You will get your chance and you will rock it. I know that becau-"

He was interrupted by five words coming from Robins mouth that sent chills down his spine.

"I'm unable to have children."

He froze, he was speechless, he knew that she was being serious and his heart sent immediate pain through his body. Everything Robin had been doing and every way she had been acting suddenly made sense. She wasn't upset because she wasn't pregnant; she was upset because she could never be.

"Robin, I-I-uh, I don't know what to say."

Robin turned herself around and pushed her head into Barneys chest, finding comfort as his arms wrapped tightly around her as if they belonged and his head coming down to place a single kiss on her forehead.

"Don't say a thing."

And neither of them did for the rest of the night. They just stayed curled up tightly in each other's arms, bringing comfort to each other because nothing else mattered than that. Barney watched as the secret image of he, Robing and their four children huddled together watching TV as it snowed outside faded away. Nothing would be the same again but that didn't mean he had to let go of Robin. He knew that without a doubt, he would never stop loving her.
