It was just another slow day for the LAPD Major Crimes Division, Sanchez was texting on his cell phone, Flynn and Provenza were discussing Flynn's new girlfriend, Tao was on his computer doing only God knows what, Gabriel was out and about, and Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson was trying to make use of time and figure out what to get Fritz for his 40th birthday. It was in two weeks and she wanted to get an early start on it because once a murder comes in she knew she would have no time to get an extra special birthday present and end up just getting him a simple old card.

"Maybe I could, no. Or but maybe I could, no," she thought aloud

When suddenly, she was interrupted from her thoughts when Chief Will Pope walked into the room. "What's on your mind?" he asked.

"Oh, Fritz's birthday is coming up, and I want to get him something that's memorable," she replied.

"Hmmm," he thought. "Oh, why not through him a surprise party?"

"That's a good idea, but I still have to get him a present," she answered

"Well, I know you'll think of something," he stated. "But I've got to go. See you around"

Just after he left her cell phone began to ring. It was Gabriel.

"Hello," she said.

"Hey, Chief," he said casually, "A murder has just been called in. It's 2937, Downtown, E 3rd street."

"Ok, I'll be there in ten minutes," she stated. After she hung up, she stood up and sighed. "So much for getting ahead."

Once she and the rest of her squad arrived at the crime scene, neighbors and reporters from local news stations were crowding around the police tape. As she approached the house, she spotted Taylor talking to one of the neighbors. "How did he get here so fast?" she asked Provenza.

"I don't know. What do you think I'm a mind reader?"

"Well, I wasn't expecting an answer," she said flatly before walking over to the man.

"Commander Taylor, how did you get here before Major Crimes did?"

"I was in the area, is that such such a crime?" he said briefly.

"No, I was just curious," she announced before walking toward the victims house.

When she got inside, she found Sgt. Gabriel standing in the corner of the victim's kitchen.

"Sgt. Gabriel," she sort of shouted making him jump, "What happened?"

"Well, around 12:00A.M., Miss. Denise Erickson got out of bed, maybe to get a drink or she heard the intruder. She then walked through the kitchen, into the dinning room and was shoot down by her killer, once in the back, twice in the head, who was standing right here," he explained while walking to a big X on the floor.

"And how did the killer get in?"

"Through the basement window."

"And did the intruder leave anything behind."

"Yes, the gun, which is right over there and a trail of footprints which start down stairs and lead all the way up to the top of the stairs."

After examining the footprints, going over all the information again, and giving everyone an assignment, Brenda decided to go back to her office and try to come up with a present for Fritz.

"Ok, so I'll through him the surprise party, but what should I get him as a present?" she thought to her self.

"What has Fritz been dieing to have?" she repeated in her head. And then the idea hit her in the head just like a bomb at Pearl Harbor. A child. Six words that could change her world, for better or worse. The constant care, letting go, and the worst of all, the chance of raising it wrong. But when she thought about it, she had to admit that Fritz has done a lot of things for her. Whether it was at work or at home he's done it all for her. So, why couldn't she do something nice for him. Why not try for a baby, chances for her to get pregnant at her age were very slim but, there was no harm in trying. And plus, if things turned for the worst, she would always have work right by her side.
