HE KNOWS

It's a simple ambush, if anything the Jaffa do can be called simple. He really should have seen it coming. But now is neither the time nor the place to be thinking such thoughts. Out of the corner of his eye, he can see Teal'c dropping Jaffa left and right. Daniel isn't far away either, managing to open a wormhole home and still defend himself.

Focusing on his 2IC, he suddenly can't move. She is outnumbered, but there is nothing he can do; some invisible force is holding him in place. As if in slow motion, he watches as she falls under the enemy's attack. Then, as she hits the ground, he is released.

"CARTER!"

He now only has a single goal: to make sure she is ok. Rushing towards her, he takes no notice of the Jaffa that fall because of him; they are just obstacles in his path. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he realizes Teal'c and Daniel are still defending the gate. But he focuses only on her, and as seconds pass, he becomes more worried, she has yet to move. He gains a knife wound to his left thigh, it registers as a dull pain, nothing more; all that matters is that she be alright.

He knows he may have to watch her die one day. If anyone was to ask him about this fact, he would respond with something about it being part of the job. Yes, he would be upset but no more than he was supposed to; teammates dying are to be expected given the nature of their job. But, in truth, he would be destroyed; he would rather die than lose Carter. He simply would not continue living. He wouldn't want to.

Suddenly the path to her is clear; the Jaffa are gone, but that is not important, only she is.

He knows she may die one day and it rips him apart that it may be happening right now.

Dropping to his knees beside her, he lifts her head and gently calls her name.

But her eyes remain closed, and the panic continues to rise; he calls again, this time slightly shaking her shoulders.

And he is rewarded as her bright blue eyes fluttered open and focus on him.

"Sir."

"Hey Carter, how you feeling?"

"My head hurts."

"It's alright Carter, we'll get the Doc to check you out. Let's go home."

All traces of worry and panic are gone because inside, his heart has lightened. He may lose her one day, but it's not going to be today.
