Deeper

It was true that in the beginning they clashed (violently, one might add). It might be correct to even go so far as to say they hated each other. She thought he was a cruel dangerous person only trying to control Mytho. He thought she was worthless- only worth notice because she's the reason Mytho got hurt. Being scared (though at the time he would never admit it) and not knowing how else to protect Mytho, he would threaten her, trying to scare her away.

Once they began to work together, though, they began to see just how wrong they were. She saw his tears, he saw her willingness to die for the Prince. She saw his pain, he saw her happiness. She saw his fears, he saw hers. She saw his desire to protect Mytho, he saw her tears.

They saved each other's lives, more than once. They had treated each other's wounds (some were physical, some were not), and they fought together, when it felt like the whole world was against them.

They knew each other better than anyone else because of all this and more.

And because of this, in the end they were closer together than to the one they hd tried to protect.

However, their relationship could not simply be described in words such as "I love you," or anything like that. It went deeper than that.

It seemed so easy to tell, from his promises to her (to stay with her, to protect her), and her opinion of him (he made the weak part of her stronger), but at the same time it felt like there was more.

The gentle smiles he gave her, when all anyone else would see is his angry or expressionless face. The worry and fear on her face, only for him, when he had nearly died (more than once). The tears he cried- for her. The tears she cried for him (because he was unable to show weakness- she felt it painful).

Small things, that seemed so unnoticeable. Yet as time passed, and that story was over, it seemed all the more noticeable.

She was a duck now, but now this connection, this bond they shared, showed even more. He was always with her, just as he had promised, said (with mere words) he would be.

Her eyes are a little sad, and his are a little sad, and even this goes beyond words. For while he can be with her, he can do nothing about her being a duck. At least, not yet.
