"Katara, how come Dad's not coming home yet?" I ask my older sister by four years. "I don't know Sokka, but Gran Gran wants us to go fishing, so grab your boomerang and your fishing spear okay?" She answers. Nodding, I go to the hut we share with our Grandmother, and grab the requested items along with one more parka just in case we need it. Katara's already waiting for me at the canoe with an oilskin pouch to hold our fish. When we are far enough away from the village, Katara uses her waterbending ability to get us there faster, while I spear fish along the way. When we finally stop near open waters, we stop at a glacier and eat some of the dried fish Katara brought with. Something keeps drawing me to the glacier side, and finally I get annoyed enough to use my boomerang to chip at it. INstead, the glacier breaks open to reveal a boy my age in old fashined Air Nomad clothing with a big furry beast behind him. On his shoulder is a smaller furry animal, and the boy is glowing. "Sokka, get back please."Katara says. Something tells me to poke him with the butt of the fishing spear, so I do. It wakes him up and he stops glowing. "Who are you two, my name's Aang." The boy asks. "I'm Sokka, this is my sister Katara. Why were you in the glacier?" I ask him. "I ran away from the Temple cause they said I was the Avatar. I don't want to be the Avatar, I just wanted to look out for my little brother." Aang says.
Just then black snow starts to fall like it did when I was four and Mom was killed by the Fire Nation. "Sokka, we have to go back to the village, come on." Katara says, dragging me over to the canoe. I'm the first to notice that the bottom of the canoe is broken, and water is starting to flood into it. Grabbing the oilskin pouch of fish, the spare parka, and the supply bag I leap back accidentally fueling my jump with air bending. "Sokka, Gran Gran told you never to do that, it's not safe." Katara says. "I didn't mean to, it just happens. It's not like anyone can teach me how to Airbend or Fire bend without being found out." I say petulantly. "I know, Sokka but you have to be careful." Katara says just as Aang says we can get back on his flying bison. Katara doesn't want to, but I'm already climbing up behind the bison's head. Katara finally gives in, and Aang goes, "Appa. yip yip, to the Southern Water Tribe Village." Arriving ust as Fire Nation ships land on the shores near the village, I leap off the side of the Sky bison and head to the center of the village holding my boomerang in my hands. Reaching the middle of the huts, Gran Gran is holding one of the younger girls, Maikku, while the Fire Nation Soldiers search the camp.
I've only recently celebrated my tenth Freezing, having been born on a lunar eclipse the first in ninety years, ten years after the Avatar vanished had been the last one. Sometimes I have dreams about a temple in the warmth, being attacked and I wake up screaming. Gran Gran usually wakes me before that, but sometimes she doesn't. Rushing at the nearest Fire Nation soldier, I start pounding his stomach before accidentally using firebending against him. Two other soldiers see it, and grab my arms, and I panic. the last time my arms were grabbed, I lost control, and had to be doused with Katara's water bending. This time, the Firebenders drag me with them, and then everything goes dark.
