He flipped the key and heard the bike beneath him roar to life, before settling at a low purr as it awaited his command. Robin went for nightly bike rides a lot lately to feel the cold air and to just think for awhile. He pulled out of the Titan tower garage and through the under ground passage way watching the rows of lights go by before he was let out onto a dark street of Jump City, the place his father had dumped him about a year ago.
His father. He thought to himself, the man that raised him since his real parents were murdered. Batman, or Bruce to Robin was the man that had caught their murderer and put him to justice. Robin would replay the scenes in his head so much lately that he had began taking headache pills hourly, the thoughts were just too much strain; his mother calling his name out, his father's terrified eyes, the applauding from their murderer in the crowd. it had all become too much for the young hero.
Thoughts darting through his head, watching old memories like theater in his mind..Robin didn't see the road end, 'Closed For Construction' Robin saw at the last minute, as his bike's front wheel met with a cinder block that was meant to block off the road.
He felt the metal crunch beneath him, and saw the street and some lights below him, he heard a woman scream, and as Robin realized he was airborne it ended with a loud crunch he could feel something wet on the side of his face, and people surrounding him. Then the darkness came.
After that the only thing he heard next was a heart monitor, he couldn't seem to open his eyes though he knew where he was, Back in titan tower. Glad to be home he tried to open his eyes but simply couldn't nor could he move his arms or legs, the only thing he could do was listen. listen to his friends that surrounded him, recognizing every voice.
"he's not doing well.." that was Cyborg, Robin thought to himself, is he talking about me?
"you can fix him, can you not?" Starfire..she sounds scared..
"I don't think he's coming back from this one Star.."
'no, I'm here.. I'm right here'
no one could hear him, he could make no sound.
"I do not wish Robin to suffer..But could he recover?"
"I'm afraid not..I'll have to pull the plug.. he wouldn't want to be kept alive by machines..like..some of us.." Cyborg said, looking at his metal hand.
"oh robin.." Starfire began to cry, laying her head on Beastboy's shoulder who was trying to hold back his tears best he could. Raven turned her head down and closed her eyes, Cyborg was trying to be strong for the team.
"everyone say your goodbyes, then i'll pull the plug.." he said softly.
'No, Cyborg..Raven..Starfire..Beastboy i'm still here..'
but no words could make it past Robin's lips.
'is this really how it ends..? after all the years of crime fighting..with batman and the team.. one slip on my bike and this is how it ends..?'
Robin heard a faint 'thump' and listened to the monitor, hearing his own heart beat slowly fade away..
buh-bump..buh-bump...buh-bump...buh-bump...
