The Truth Hurts

No, you're never gonna get it (Ow!)
Never ever gonna get it (No, not this time)
No, you're never gonna get it (My love)
Never ever gonna get it

Another typical night at the Bronze, and once again
Xander felt like his heart had been torn out and stomped
upon. He felt that way pretty much every time he was around
Buffy. He loved her, and she didn't love him. The only
sensible thing to do, to preserve his sanity, was to
talk himself out of loving her. So, why did he think he
had those feelings towards her in the first place?

I remember how it used to be
You never was this nice, you can't fool me
Now you talkin' like you made a change
The more you talk, the more things sound the same
What makes you think you can just walk back into her life
Without a good fight? Oh...
I just sit back and watch you make a fool of yourself
Cuz you're just wasting your time, oh...

Yeah, that was the right approach to take. It must just
be puppy love. He was only a teenager and she was his
first big crush, the first one that counted beyond
pulling pigtails or picking a fight in a clumsy attempt
to gain attention. What kind of idiot could truly think he
was in love with a girl at first sight, based solely
on her appearance? If Buffy had been fat and had buckteeth,
he wouldn't be in this situation now. No, his initial
interest in her had totally sprouted from that first
glimpse of her slender, shapely legs and her firm ass and
her luxurious hair. He hadn't even paused to consider that
maybe that beautiful girl was a Grade-A bitch, possibly a
blithering idiot or a snob. He hadn't known a damn thing
about her other than that she was pretty. That wasn't love;
that was infatuation only a fool would prolong. She had
never shown any romantic interest in plain old Xander in the
first place. Maybe if he'd been more dashing or intriguing
or something, he would have stood a chance. Maybe.

No, you're never gonna get it (Not this time)
Never ever gonna get it (My lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (Had your chance to make a change)
Never ever gonna get it

Yet despite his attempts to reason with himself, Xander
couldn't help it. His obsession with Buffy lingered.
He longingly stared across the room at her, where she
was dancing in a little clump with Willow and Faith.
She'd asked him to come onto the dance floor too, of
course, but her request had been issued in a casual tone
that made it painfully clear it didn't much matter to her
one way or the other. Oh, she wouldn't have minded his
presence, probably would have welcomed it in a distantly
casual manner, but she didn't long for it in that aching,
soul-deep way he wished she would.

Doesn't matter what you do or what you say
She don't love you, no way
Maybe next time you'll give your woman a little respect
So you won't be hearing her say, "No way"

He had to face the facts. Buffy was in love with Angel, and
even if she happened to be unattached, she'd never be
romantically interested in him. Willow, Giles, even Faith
stood a better chance with her than he did. She thought of
him as a friend. No less than that, but certainly no more.

No, you're never gonna get it (Sweet lovin')
Never ever gonna get it (My lovin')
No, you're never gonna get it (Sweet lovin')
Never ever gonna get it (My lovin')...

But despite knowing this, he couldn't tear his eyes away from
her. Yeah, he was never gonna get it.
