Lucky

Yuna cupped the hot coffee between her hands, the steam settling on her brightly colored mittens. She stood outside the café, starring at the street lights, and the soft snowflakes falling in their light. It was a rarity for snow to come at this time of year, and Yuna felt the need to honor it. A cup of coffee and a walk with someone special seemed like the perfect way.

Checking her watch, Yuna sighed. It wasn't like him to be late, but she talked herself out of the almost-panic that pulsed through her body for a split second.

Traffic might be bad, she thought, although it had been at least five minutes since the last car had gone by. His friends might have needed some help, she supposed, although that didn't explain why he didn't text her to say he'd be late.

She shook her head softly, a few snowflakes falling out of her hair. She was overanalyzing, she knew.

Yuna checked her watch again, and took a deep breath. Her phone suddenly went off, a loud, high pitched tone screaming from the inside pocket of her coat. Yuna nearly dropped her coffee in her rush to answer the damn thing and silence the irritating tone.

"H—Hello?" she stammered. Blips of a voice came from the other end, pieces of words, and vague background noises. "Hello? I can't hear you."

An obnoxious scream came from the other end of the phone.

"Oh, hello, Katsu," Yuna sighed, her brother giving her an almost-instant headache. "What do you need? The keys? No, I don't know. You shouldn't be driving anyways, you sound intoxicated. I am not a downer, Katsu, I'm trying to keep you from killing yourself or worse, someone else. Look, I have to—no, I'm not coming home to help you look for the keys. Katsu, I have to go, okay? Bye."

Yuna heaved a huge sigh and resisted the urge to throw her phone into the road. He still hadn't shown up, and the phone call from her brother had made her a little jumpy. Worry gnawed at the back of her mind, so she decided to dial his number with precision and care, her mitten's thumb hitting the wrong number more than once. She held her breath as she waited for it to ring.

"Hey, you've reached my cell, I can't come to—"

"Yuna!"

She jumped and spun around, almost spilling her coffee again. She couldn't help but smile as she saw him standing behind her.

"I'm sorry I'm late, Yusuke decided that it would be a good idea to give me the wrong directions to this place and my phone died before I could call you," he said nervously, rubbing the back of his head. Yuna just smiled.

"It's fine," she said, "I was just a little worried. You've never been late before."

"Yeah, I'm sorry. I see you've already got your coffee. You ready to go for a walk?"

"Of course, Kazuma," Yuna smiled, a warm feeling spreading from the pit of her stomach to her limbs as he reached for her hand. And she knew that it wasn't the coffee making that wonderful feeling.

She couldn't believe how lucky she was to have Kazuma Kuwabara here holding her hand, looking at her in that certain way that made her feel like the center of the world. Yuna gripped his hand a little tighter, and smiled a little wider, as they took a step off the curb, and into the snowy night.
