DETENTION

Okay, in my defense, he had it coming.

There were many things gone wrong that cursed Monday to begin with.

The coffeemaker broke.

The toast popped out more toast than bread.

I missed the train, and consequently came in late.

Icing on the cake? Turns out first period was Maths. Meaning Jinno was very pleased with me. Gave me a free one-way ticket to detention after school ended. On the first day of the semester too!

I swear someone up there has it out for me.

Welcome to the life of Mikan Sakura. Things couldn't possibly get any better than this, can it?

Of course, right at that moment, the door opens and in comes my favorite person in the whole world (NOT!) in all his unruly, haggard glory. Of course.

"Oh? Detention so early in the sem, Polka Dots?" Natsume raises his brow when he notices me.

"Speak for yourself, Hyuuga," I clench my jaw. "And don't call me that, you stupid perverted pig!"

"Au contraire, Pol-ka-dots," He drawls, "I wasn't sent to detention because I was late on the first day of the sem."

He drops a thick stack of papers on my desk.

"What the heck is this?" I skim through what appears to be . . . assessment forms? What the heck?

A stapler lands on top with a 'thud'. "These, Polka, are the papers you need to sort through for today's detention."

My eye twitches at his smirk. "You're kidding."

He tilts his chair back, legs crossed on the table. "Just quit your yapping and get to work. It's just our whole batch anyway."

"Just our whole batch? That's practically 320 students!"

"That's why I told you to get to work already."

You must not curse like a sailor, Mikan. You must not curse like a sailor-!

With a groan, I start flipping through the papers, stapler in hand. Well at least they were in alphabetical order already. Honestly, that stupid jerk! Stupid Jinno! Stupid coffeemaker! Stupid toaster! Stupid Monday! Ugh-!

"You know, with the way you grumble to yourself like that, you look like a crazy old hag."

"Well you are such a jerk! The way you sit like that, even the way you look – like you couldn't care for anything at all! I don't even know what your fan girls see in you!"

He shrugs, "I don't know either; personally, I couldn't care less what people think about me."

"Oh sure, 'cuz nothing fazes the almighty Hyuuga," I roll my eyes, "Doesn't care about anything but himself."

"Why? Want me to care for you?" His smirk is seriously irritating me right now!

"No! Not at all! Why the heck would I? I'm not your stupid fan girl."

"Oh I don't know, Polka," He drawls, "You sound a bit too defensive, don't you think? Jealous?"

I flush. "You are so full of yourself! No, I'm not being defensive! And I am most definitely not jealous at all! Why would I be jealous anyway? If anything, I'd rather be jealous of Misaki. She's so lucky to have Tsubasa for a boyfriend." I smile, picturing the duo, "He's sweet and caring and fun to be with. Unlike someone who does nothing but bully me!"

"Say that again?" I jump in my seat. Since when did he get this close? The dark look on his face is starting to scare me. Not that I'd ever admit it to that jerk head.

"W-why? What's with that look, Hyuuga? Jealous?" I mock him. Not a good idea, it seems. I don't like that evil smile on his face...

He twirls on a loose strand of my hair, tugging it so I'm close enough to feel his warm breath on my face. "If I say yes? What would you do then, Miii-kaaan?"

He's too close! Waaayyy too close! I close my eyes, trying not to tremble so much. He chuckles darkly, and I realize my face is flushed. I will not lose to him-! "W-why the heck would y-you be je-jealous? Don't tell me you like me?"

"You have no idea, Polka Dots," His hot breath on my ear sends shivers down my spine. He moves away in a blink of an eye, and starts for the door.

WHAT ON EARTH JUST HAPPENED? WHAT DID HE MEAN BY THAT?!

"Oh, and by the way, thanks for doing the arranging for me. Dad wants this done by 5."

"D-dad? Wait, as in, the Principal?! Y-you mean this wasn't exactly part of my detention at all?!"

He dares smirk that infuriating smirk of his. Why I oughtta-! He-! This stupid jerk-! "Thanks for the help. I knew I could count on you, Polka Dots. Oh wait, it's Strawberries today, isn't it?"

Before I knew it, the stapler had sailed across the room, and landed straight on Natsume Hyuuga's head. I guess having softball for Phys. Ed. last year was beneficial after all.
