«Awakening»
Prologue
(part one)
"Ciel Phantomhive died in 1889, exactly a century and a half ago…"
"I know", the demon replied, and let out a soft groan.
"Then, why do you keep clinging to his memory?", alleged the reaper.
"Well, I got used to his presence… too used…"
"He was just a soul, like other thousand souls…" spoke the god, cackling a cruel smile.
"Yes, at the beginning…" the demon nodded, "but then, he evolved into…"
"Into?" inquired the gloomy one.
"Something purer than…"
"Purer?"
"It was painful. Everything. I felt like killing him beforetime…"
"Why?"
"To feel safe. He threatens to destroy my paradigms, to…"
"You mean 'threatened'?"
"What?"
"He's not here anymore, Sebastian. You should conjugate the words in…"
"I can't."
"You… can't?"
"A matter of aesthetics", he shrugged off.
"Why are you back in London, anyways?"
"Once in a while, you need to rekindle what's gone…"
"Interesting", the Undertaker whispered, and a frown marred his features.
"To me, it's more or less like a ritual. To come back, and evaluate the circumstances. Some things remain untouched, you known? It helps me to cope with mourning".
"There is no rational homage here, Sebastian. What kind of sings are you hoping to locate? The young Earl perished long ago. His beloved ones lay buried beneath the gravestones. Ruins and remains, there's nothing left of him…"
"I'm still here".
"Of my, it's true…" the Undertaker gasped, feigning surprise, "I haven't heard of nothing alike…" he giggled.
"Simply eternal", he reaffirmed, and waited.
It was getting colder.
"Yes, my friend. Eternal".
"And the prospect of heading along seems so, so utterly boring…"
"How comes so…?"
"I want to die", the demon confessed, and smiled.
"No, you don't. How could someone crave something unattainable to his kind? It's illogical. You don't regret what you don't remember. You don't need what you don't acknowledge. Death is out of your reach, it's out of your nature", he stated. The reaper's truth was like sweet poison.
"Humans crave for eternity".
"Humans don't know what they want. They're just hungry, always hungry… like mechanical worms…"
