Title: Status Quo
Author: Cindy Ryan
Category: One shot
Notes: I wasn't writing fanfic when Due South originally aired. Have recently acquired seasons one and two on dvd and have been greatly enjoying rewatching this wonderful series. I'm sure this has been done but I figured one more couldn't hurt
Detective Ray Vecchio's life had never been the same since the day a Mountie had walked into his precinct. A Mountie with a deaf wolf. It'd taken awhile but their unique friendship had found a familiar rhythm. Tonight Ray would give anything to have that rhythm back.
He knew it was gone forever.
Knew it as soon as raised his gun at Victoria.
If Ray killed Victoria Fraser might not forgive him.
That Ray could live with. His bullet striking his partner and best friend he couldn't live with that.
Partners had each other's back.
That's how it worked. That's how you survived on the streets.
Now as Ray stared at Fraser's blood mixing with the snow on the train platform Vecchio knew he'd take that image to his grave.
If Fraser died….
Ray shoved that thought away. He couldn't go there.
Fraser was Fraser; he'd make it.
Had to.
They'd deal with the rest.
If Ray was lucky they'd fall back to status quo.
As Fraser's quiet reciting of the poem was drowned out by approaching sirens Ray clung to that hope.
It'd keep him sane through the dark hours ahead.
