Emma huddled in the corner of her room. She looked around at all of the broken things scattered on the floor and the lopsided posters on the walls.
Her phone rang and she jumped. She scrambled her way over to her landline phone.
Picking it up, she answered roughly, "Hello?"
"Emma?" the voice said.
"You got her." Emma replied.
"Emma? Is that you? It's Sean." The voice said, worry seeping in.
Emma shot up straight and started pacing her room.
Clearing her throat she said, "Sean? How are you doing?"
"I'm fine. How about you?"
"I-I'm fine." Emma lied.
She looked to the corner of her room where a broken lamp was laying on the floor, and then to another corner where the package of condoms was still closed.
They were so rushed to just get it done, they didn't make sure the protection was on straight.
"Don't lie to me, Em." Sean said.
Emma started to cry, "I did something, Sean. And I think it was a big mistake."
"Calm down, and tell me what happened." Sean said softly into the phone.
"I- I can't." Emma cried into the phone.
"Please, Emma, tell me." He begged her.
Emma looked around the room and the memories seemed to be replaying themselves.
Her and Jay coming through the door, locked at the mouth. Jay pushed the lamp off the dresser, breaking it in the process. He sat her on the tabletop, kissing down her neck. She hopped off, pushing him back up against the wall. Her Pink Floyd poster fell to the ground in a clump. Jay pushed her down to the bed and reached into his pocket, taking out a small blue packet.
Condoms.
"Just hurry." She had said.
He nodded, trying to rip open the packet, but it wouldn't go. Finally he bit it. He thought he had taken out the condom but really it was only a piece of plastic. The adrenaline rush made his vision blurry and he didn't notice the difference.
"Emma, you there?" Sean asked and she snapped back out of the memory.
"Uh, yeah. Just…just remembering." She said, regret flooding her voice.
"Remembering what? I need you to tell me what happened." He now sounded annoyed.
"I-I had sex with Jay." She paused, waiting for his reaction, but it didn't come so she continued, "We thought we used protection, but it wasn't. It's hard to explain."
"Then explain it to me." Sean said softly.
She explained about the piece of plastic that was mistaken as the condom while more scenes played in her head.
Jay collapsing on top of her, his head in her cleavage, both breathing heavily. After a few minutes, Emma pushed him off of her and she went to go get dressed, noticing the packet on the floor.
"I thought you used a condom." She said, picking up with two fingers, dangling it in front of his face.
"I did." Jay said, pulling on his pants.
"Then why is it still in the packet?" she asked.
Jay looked up, shocked.
"Wow. Em, are you pregnant?" Sean asked, his voice shaking.
"I don't know. I haven't left the house. Only for school." Emma explained.
"How long ago did it happen?"
"About two weeks."
"Go out, buy a pregnancy test, bring it home, see if you're pregnant, and call me back." Sean said.
Emma agreed, got his number, and hung up.
She got dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, taking one last glance at her room, sighing, and walking out the door.
x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
Emma entered her house, waved to her mother, and went downstairs to her personal bathroom.
She unwrapped the test and took it.
After a few minutes, she called Sean.
"Sean?" Emma asked when he picked up the phone, "I'm pregnant."
"I'm coming back." Was his answer.
And then all she heard was dial tone.
