She'd been wearing it around her neck. That had to mean something, right?
Serena's eyes strayed down to her neckline. Dangling there, was the ring Darien had given her. It was a gorgeous ring, that she knew. Still, there were nagging thoughts that had been stirring at the back of her mind since the moment she'd received the small piece of jewelry. Thoughts that sent a cold chill down her spine whenever she paid too much attention. Thoughts that were the reason why she'd been wearing it around her neck.
So much about it just seemed wrong.
Although she'd had her moments, Serena was far from being a selfish person. You don't spend your life crusading as the saviour of love and justice if you're in it for yourself. When Darien had said that he was going to study in America, she'd felt disappointed. This led to her feeling guilty and then ashamed. But then, something strange happened - Serena started to feel angry.
This man, Darien, had promised to love her until the day they both died, and was now leaving her. He'd be back in four years, that was fact, but did that make it okay? She was his princess - literally. He had sworn to protect her from their enemies. Was he going to do that from across the world?
Never mind protecting her, how could he do this to the people of Tokyo? How could this prince abandon his people?
These were the thoughts that kept her up at night, that crept up on her during class, that nearly brought her to tears in battle, that made her wear the ring around her neck.
