What was happening?
Seven hearts nearly stopped, and for half a minute everything seemed to hang in the balance. The stunned silence bloomed and filled the entire gym as every single person gasped and held their breath.
That boy was unbelievable. Jeff and Annie?! Kissing?! Here it was, in front of her. "Abed... Abed?" The reality of the situation didn't even occur to her until Jeff turned to respond, when suddenly it made sense- though she wasn't quite sure why. She was both relieved and disappointed when they broke apart; the enthusiasm with which Jeff responded was a bit alarming. Then Annie spoke and the meaning of all this became clear. Man is evil, indeed. She looked at Abed and made a mental note to listen to every word that boy said in the future. And look out for werewolves.
He was a god. A god. This obviously wasn't how he had imagined it- he saw through Annie's gambit immediately and he had thought it would have been more intimate and probably farther in the future, at the end of the year at least- but there they were. He ignored Shirley's tapping, trying to observe every final detail for future use. He saw the shock rock through Jeff's body and noted the eagerness and sudden desperation in the way Jeff brought his hands to her waist and attempted to pull her to him. He smiled at Annie's words announcing their success and heartily enjoyed the triumph, but out of the corner of his eye he also saw the look on Jeff's face as she spoke. Oh, he was a god.
Whaaaaaaaa-
This hardly seemed the time for such a passionate embrace, but he understood- now or never, and all that; he'd had plenty of those in his days. Hopefully they would stop before things got too heated, that would be awk- oh.
She paused, cigarette in hand, trying not to care. Why did she have to try? She didn't care. This was some ruse, and she didn't care, anyway. Okay, so maybe she wasn't the biggest fan of this, or the way Jeff pressed into Annie like his life depended on it, but her heart leaped and she grinned and cheered at the victory. Annie was so in control- was this really the same girl who had cried in the bathroom about Troy just weeks ago? She went to light her cigarette when suddenly a hot tub flashed before her eyes and she gagged. That goddamn man had done it.
She regretted this decision immediately-there was no way this would work, so much for seizing the day, now she'll just look like a fool- but she brought her lips to his anyway and hoped for the best. She felt his face contort a little in surprise, but why wasn't he responding? She pulled away just slightly-just enough to tease him- and was immediately rewarded when he began to kiss her back. Three, two, and there it was: he had dropped Simmons and turned to give this all of his attention. For a split second she too was tempted to keep going at it (probably the same split second that his hands made contact with her waist) but she pushed him away, triumphant. Little Annie Adderall? That'll teach them.
In hindsight, the speed at which he forgot where he was was a bit alarming- but there you have it. The moment her small hands grabbed his face and she kissed him, he was a goner. There was something heavy in his arms that was definitely not her and definitely an obstacle to this progressing and thus he dropped it and turned to press his body closer to her and deepen the kiss. For a shining second, everything was Annie and nothing hurt. Then she was pushing him away- why was she pushing him away goddammit- and announcing to the stunned gym crowd (that had suddenly reappeared) that man was evil. Oh. He was utterly speechless for one of the only times in his life, absolutely unable to process what had just happened. Oh.
