The Storm

Dylan's Story:

I woke up early that morning with 2 blankets on my back, the heat from yesterday was completely gone and replaced by crisp cold air. I was sweating badly from the horrible equine flu but still shivered and rustled down into my deep bed of straw Amy laid for me the night before. I stood for a second listening to the storm brewing just outside. It had only started moments before but the crackle of the lightning and the sound of the leaves blowing against the wind seemed as if they'd been going for days. I could tell it certainly wasn't going to let up any time soon.

Every so often the stable would fill with the sound of whining, coughing, and hooves kicking the side of the barn. Then the echoing would disappear just as fast as it came.

The storm blew on and on, wrecking trees and anything else in it's path. Pretty soon I couldn't tell day from night and night from day. It was all just one big blur. Everyone stayed indoors drinking iced tea and talking with concerned looks on their faces. There had been many storms at Heartland before but it had never been this bad.

The storm started to sound like everything was talking—the thunder boomed down a question and the whistling wind would reply then the creaking door of the barn would add in something else. We were restless and wondered when this retched storm would end so we could all go back to our normal lives, but it seemed as though that would never happen

I sensed something was wrong, besides the storm, for everyone was acting frightened and tense. They all ran down to the basement, fiddling with the radio. Something was going on and I found out soon enough.

A loud growl echoed outside the barn, which could only mean one thing; Tornado. The paddock was filled with whining and yelping. Then, all of the sudden, just as the sound of the storm started to fade, a large cracking noise ripped through the barn and everything spun out of control.

A tree was hovering right above my head with pieces and chunks falling on my back every second. I bucked and rolled my eyes, it was all so confusing, I didn't understand. Just then Amy and Ty came running through the broken-down doors with bright lights gripped in their palms. Ty headed strait to my stall.

I wouldn't move though, I couldn't move everything was too frightening. I fought the lead rope pulling back and falling into my hay, then, panting hard, as a last result to my anger I flung my legs against the wall. Major mistake. The roof came crumbling down. To my horror a sharp piece of wood came flying towards me sending a horrible, painful sensation through my leg as I went unconscious.

I awoke to the sound of sirens, aching in all parts of my body and tried to stand up but couldn't. Amy was no longer in the paddock and Ty wasn't standing next to me either, rather Scott was kneeling beside me and there were two tubes attached to me. I sighed and looked deep into his determined eyes hoping so much that he could make me better, make the pain go away. Slowly he gave a slight, sad smile and whispered soothing words into my ear. At that moment I knew I was in good hands and no matter what he did it would be for the better. I lay back into my bed thinking about everything and nothing at the same time. Then everything went black.

And I was happy.
