River would never know that she had failed her husband. The Doctor would know, as soon as he gave her that diary and instructed her to never let him read it, that her promise to do just that had already been broken.
He had tried so very, very hard on the Library to not peek. To let it alone, for what good could come of reading his own future? Once it was read, it was set in stone. But there was one time when he could get to it, and everyone else was just occupied enough not to notice.
And that was why he was now on the Third Moon of Sholvo.
The Doctor took me to a restaurant on the Third Moon of Sholvo today. He told me that he had made the reservation shortly after he met me for the first time, so that he could take me there once he knew who I was.
"What's the name, please, sir?"
"Smith. John Smith."
