Apologies and Accomplishments

Part 1

Captain's Log- Stardate 2258.54

Two months have passed since The Enterprise's maiden voyage. The crew is starting to think of the ship as home, rather than a mere Starfleet assignment. We are currently en route to an Andorian colony planet for rest and recuperation, which is exactly what we have all been waiting for!

Captain James T. Kirk proudly sat in the center seat of the bridge, slightly swiveling back and forth as if the command chair he sat upon were an amusement park ride. He carefully pressed the red button to stop recording his voice and complete the official report he was required to keep. At first, Kirk had found keeping a Captain's Log to be pointless and a time-waster, but over the last couple of weeks, the native Iowan had grown accustomed to the daily routine of recounting The Enterprise's latest adventures. It made the entire, surreal experience of becoming Starfleet's youngest captain actually seem genuine.

"Captain," Commander Spock curtly greeted as he approached Kirk. "Is it your intention to make such a glaring grammatical error in your official report?" Spock's blank face did not twitch and his tone did not waver.

Kirk paused before answering, determined to shut up this Vulcan hybrid know-it-all for good. The captain went over his previous entry again in his mind, wracking his brain for the error that Spock had spoken about. After a moment, Kirk finally answered his second-in-command. "Please explain yourself, Mr. Spock." The request was simple and understandable.

Spock did not waste any time and willingly obliged Kirk. "Your last statement. 'We are currently en route to an Andorian colony planet for some much-needed rest and recuperation, which is exactly what we have all been waiting for!'," Spock quoted perfectly, sans the emotional ups-and-downs of Kirk's voice. "You have ended your sentence with the preposition 'for'. Was this mistake deliberate or indeliberate?"

Cocking his head slightly, Kirk considered his options. He could honestly answer and admit that the grammar flaw was, indeed, a mistake. That would make him out to be careless and incapable of even rudimentary speech. A good captain was neither of those, Kirk reasoned. The other option was to say that the there was a reason for the preposition, but what could the reason be? Cornered into losing the argument, Kirk tried to dodge the entire subject.

"Did you hear my report all the way from the hallway?" Kirk questioned incredulously. "That's some impressive hearing, Mr. Spock."

If Kirk did not know any better, he would have sworn he saw slight annoyance creep into Spock's facial features, but in an instant, any trace of emotion in Spock was gone. "As I am sure any first-year secondary-student is aware, Captain, my Vulcan heritage allows me to hear noises that humans cannot. A Vulcan's hearing is much more sensitive than that of a human's, so a sound considered inaudible to a human would not be considered so for a Vulcan."

"Ah, I see," Kirk awkwardly acknowledged. "I guess I should watch what I say around here," he attempted to joke, but Spock obviously did not find any humor in the situation. Kirk grew sick of being under the constant glare of Spock, and tried to make himself appear busy with something, anything else, so the commander would leave him alone. After mind-melding with the older, different timeline Spock, Kirk was able to not only witness, but truly feel the friendship that his older self had with older Spock. Kirk had hoped that he and Spock would be able to achieve a comparable friendship in this timeline, but after two months of short, clipped responses and unsteady gazes, Kirk was losing hope.

"Agreed," Spock nodded. "You should be wary of both the content of your speech and the grammar with which you express yourself."

Kirk inwardly sighed. Maybe Spock did have a bit of human in him after all. For what logical reason would Spock have to bring up Kirk's grammatical error again? The captain could not contain a slight snicker. "Duly noted," he replied. Kirk assumed that since Spock had proved his point, he would leave Kirk alone and pursue whatever it is Vulcans did in their spare time. Time passed, but Spock still remained in Kirk's presence.

"Captain…" Spock coolly stated. The intention of the proclamation was cleverly disguised.

"Spock…" Kirk echoed with a hint of playfulness in his voice, although he was unsure of where this conversation was going.

"I would like to continue this discussion in a more private setting, Captain." Kirk noticed that Spock, who was usually so ready to be support his statements with endless logical reason, did not make eye contact with him.

"Of course," Kirk agreed, repressing his growing curiosity and worry. "When and where?"

"My quarters should be an adequate venue," Spock offered. "Come at your leisure."

"I will be looking forward to it," Kirk smiled.

"A fascinating earth colloquialism," Spock observed as he walked away. "When nerves process information so the brain can make sense of said information, the process is instant and continuous. It is, therefore, impossible to 'forwardly look' at anything, yet in order to express anticipation and excitement, the term 'looking forward' is used." Spock threaded his hands behind his back and continued his journey leaving Kirk to his chair on the bridge. Kirk was about to follow Spock so their conversation could be finished, but he hesitated. In any case, Spock did say to come at his own leisure.

"Computer," Kirk annunciated so he would not have to repeat himself. "Search Logs, Captain's, 2258.54."

After a second the screen, the very entry that Kirk had just recited appeared. "Edit," Kirk ordered. "Delete phrase: 'which is exactly what we have all been waiting for'. He waited until that action had been done, not wanting to confuse the computer by giving too many consecutive commands. When the phrase vanished, Kirk continued. "Save."

Satisfied with his corrections, but resolute never to let Spock know of the alterations, Kirk journeyed to Commander Spock's living quarters. Kirk was not exactly sure why Spock wanted to speak confidentially, but he was certainly ready to find out.
