AU: Grace is cleaning out her house when she stumbles upon an old letter.
Letters To God
"Mom! Mom!"
Grace held in a sigh as she looked at her husband, Jack Papas with a subtle hint of annoyance on her face.
"What?" Jack chuckled as he threw an arm around her waist. They were in there now empty kitchen and they were packing up everything to move to a new house, "You're the one who told her that she could help."
"Yeah well her help hasn't been much help," Grace rolled her eyes but a small smile tugged at her lips as she thought of her six year old daughter Elizabeth, "All she's been doing is finding random things of mine that she likes. What good is that?"
"Did you expect any real help from a child?" Jack raised his eyebrow and Grace let out a small pout.
"Well, I was hoping."
"MOM!" The eight year old came running down the stairs, her mess of curly blonde hair bouncing carelessly with each step, "I FOUND SOMETHING!"
Jack kissed Grace's forehead before moving away from her to approach her daughter, "What's that you got there Lizzie?"
"Dad!" She whined, "Its Elizabeth now! Lizzie is so…childish."
"Oh right, I forgot, ELIZABETH is a "big girl" now," Jack rolled his eyes, "What'd you find?"
"I found a letter mommy wrote! She wrote it to God Himself!" The young girl squealed.
Grace's eyes widened, "I forgot all about that! I used to write those all the time."
Grace, Jack, and Elizabeth made their way to the living room, and Elizabeth began reading the letter.
To: MY DAD IN THE SKY
From: GRACIE
Hi! My name is Gracie Bowman if you don't remember me! I wrote a letter to you last month but I wanted to write another one. I have a big favor to ask! Mommy says we're getting a brother. Please make sure my brother is nice to me and not really mean! I pray that I will have a big brother to play games with and put makeup on! That's it God! I love you very much so please answer my prayer!
Love, Gracie
Grace couldn't help but burst out laughing, "Wow, these are ridiculous."
Jack nudged her with his elbow and smiled, "They're great."
"Mommy? What did God write back to you? I didn't see any letters from Him?"
Grace smiled at her daughter's childlike faith. Her sparkling eyes always brought joy to her mother's heart.
"Well…I don't think God writes letters, but He communicated with me by answering my prayer. I got a great brother."
The child was not satisfied, and her sparkling eyes were dimming.
Jack interjected this time, "Perhaps there's something bigger that God can do."
"Like what?" The child sparked an interest again.
"Well, it says in the Bible that we can…hmm, that we can go write into God's heavenly courtyards. We don't have to write letters like He's far away Elizabeth; we can actually go to Him."
Elizabeth shook her head, "Nu-uh! There's no way we can just go to Heaven! We're not even dead daddy."
"Smart girl," Jack laughed, "But I'm telling you the truth. Whenever we pray, our very Spirit is entering the heavenly courtyards. When you prayed for a new dollhouse, you were standing before God!"
Elizabeth didn't understand anything about spirits but the idea of her having gone into some heavenly place was enough for her.
"WOAH!" Elizabeth exclaimed, "Wait until I tell my friends I talked with God, in Heaven!"
"Way to go Jack," Grace let out a giggle, "Good luck explaining that one."
Jack rolled his eyes, "Just remember Elizabeth, God is not so far away. He's with you every day. You don't have to write letters, you can go to Him yourself and He'll hear you. Now, let's get to actual packing, if you don't mind. No more picking through mommy's old things."
Elizabeth crossed her arms, "No fun!"
"There's ice-cream later," Grace winked, and no sooner did Elizabeth jump up and start working.
