A/N: This is a poem based on Ella Enchanted. It's written from Ella's point of view when she's at the first ball. I don't own Ella Enchanted, that belongs to Gail Carson Levine. Please R&R.

Enchanted

I watch him silently.

He smiles to his guest,

Sweeps a formal bow

And music plays on.

The candles flicker

As the music moves quicker

I hope he doesn't see me

And I hope he does.

I gather up my courage

And slip into the line.

I want to see his smile.

I want to dance just once.

Though a mask hides my face

I fear the closing space,

But then I reach him and he grins

And takes my hand.

His attention starts to wander

But I foolishly entrance him

I fear he'll know it's me

And yet I want him to.

Though I can speak to him

Chance for our love is dim.

My heart will break again

In a short time.

We dance our few dances

But then the night grows old

His guests are waiting

Yet he wishes he could stay.

My heart beats faster

Though this could bring disaster.

I thank him very kindly

And I run away.

Tears are in my eyes

As I try to fall asleep.

It's not fair he can never know

I am the one he danced with.

He likes the girl he sees

But this mask will never please.

So until tomorrow night

I wait in silence.
