The Landing
Felt weightless, an unfamiliar yet exhilarating sensation. Time slows forcing mere seconds to stretch into centuries, a peaceful bliss that engulfed me whole. Then, to my dismay it came to an abrupt halt, darkness filling my eyes.
The first thing I noticed upon regaining consciousness was a cool liquid dripping down my cheek; sliding swiftly to my neck until absorbed by the collar of my jacket. Without opening my eyes I extended my hand placing it on my head to massage my temple. The whistling of birds usually a calming sound, as time went on grew to be quiet irritating. Each attempt to lift my heavy lids fed my increasing frustration towards the situation. When my anger was at its peak I finally managed to open my eyes, welcoming the irritatingly bright light emitted from the flaming orb floating in the sky above. I flexed my hand stiff from a motionless slumber; stretched the crackling joints of my fingers. Then, I averted my focus up, the sky being the only available distraction. The clouds like boats floating across a vast sea, the smell of salt water holding memories of a different life one that ended a long time ago. I allowed my mind to drift a bit longer at least until the pain receded a little. When I felt able or as able as the current situation would allow, I attempted to rise. An ear-shattering scream escaped my lips, as my chest radiated severe agony equivalent to a lemon soaked knife slicing through it. Body collapsed fist pressed in the dirt, a wave of exhaustion slapped me upside the head, leaving me faint. Before falling into unconsciousness, I mumbled, "Broken ribs, fantastic" with bitter sarcasm.
A cool spring breeze shook my hair, kissed my cheek, gently waking me from a dull sleep. I rubbed my eyes squinting from the falling sun glistened from afar. The original shock now faded was replaced by a dull ache present though out my body. But, the pain receptors were going wild near the back of my moistening skull. Sliding my tongue cross crisp lips, I was met with a familiar metallic taste. Recognizing this as blood, a shiver ran down my spin as the warm velvet seeped through my hair. Instead of panic, I responded with a light somber laugh accompanied by an odd dismal grin that gradually spread across my lips. The sun soon finished its decent letting the moon shine in all its glory. Everything in my view faded to darkness, the stars emitting small rays of light to the interminable sky above. The crickets chirped in the night a constant reminder that I was not alone. This thought was both comforting and unsettling. The wind hummed a sweet lullaby soothing the troubled thoughts over whelming my mind. Before long my eyelids fell shut as I was cast into a deep slumber by the music of the night.
