Disclaimer- I don't own Bones or any of the characters.
Summary- Set in season 6 after "The Doctor in the Photo"
A/N- This is my first posted Bones fan fic. I wrote this right after the episode originally aired so I've had it for a long time. my intention was to take it further than this, but so much time has passed i have decided to leave it like this. so it is completed even though it feels like there should be more.
thank you guys for reading. comments are appreciated :) Enjoy!
She felt like a fool. Had she really thought that he would respond differently? She forced herself to look at him as she got out of the car
"So, I'll see you at work tomorrow…" She said trying to sound normal
"Yeah. Are you sure you're okay Bones?" Booth asked worriedly.
She nodded "Of course… really, I'm fine Booth." Her voice wavered as the lie came out.
She closed the car door. He glanced at her before he drove off. For a moment she just stood there in the rain watching his taillights disappear in the distance and the rain.
How could she be so stupid?
She headed up to her apartment thinking about all the things that Booth had said to her a year ago, wishing she had felt then how she felt now. As her door closed behind her she sank to the floor crying.
She had missed her chance…
When he was half way home, Booth pulled over into an empty parking lot. He could barely see through the rain anyway. He turned the car off and laid his head against the steering wheel.
Why had it taken her so long?
It was too late. He loved Hannah. He had told Bones a year ago that he couldn't keep waiting, that he'd have to move on. She had said she understood, so he moved on. He didn't like hurting her. At one point she had been everything he wanted. But she was selfish and wouldn't open up.
Bones had hurt him! And they couldn't go back…
Booth started the car again to defog the windows as he picked up his cell phone.
She answered on the first ring
"Hey Hannah… yeah, I'm on my way home…."
Her world hadn't simply turned upside down, it felt like it had crashed around her. The last few days had been so strange. She'd had a revelation. Now she had a decision to make.
Did life go on as always or did it change? Was the totally rational part of her gone for good or was she just on hiatus? She would have to find a balance.
Really, Brennan didn't care right now. All she could feel was an all consuming sadness.
She picked up her cell phone. Usually in a moment of disappointment she would call Booth and after talking with him her world would be right again.
That wouldn't work this time…
She hated to bother her, she didn't even know what to say.
"Hello?" Angela's cheery voice answered the phone
"Angela…." Brennan said , her voice husky from crying
"Sweetie? What's wrong?" Angela asked alarmed as she picked up on her friend's tone of voice right away.
After a long moment of silence Brennan finally said
"Can you come over?"
She tried to hold the phone away from her face as she sobbed heartbrokenly
"I'll be there soon." Angela said urgently and then hung up the call.
Brennan would still be curled up in front of the door, broken, when her friend would arrive.
She was wondering if her world would ever turn right side up again.
