Disclaimer: I do not own House, the characters or anything associated with the show. I only wish I did!
Spoilers: a scene set a little bit after No Reason, when House is out of surgery.
'Dr. Wilson.'
James Wilson looked up from the file he was reading at his desk. 'He's really tired' she realized with a shock. But he smiled anyway and motioned for her to come into her office and take a seat.
'Hi Cameron. How are you holding up?'
She was touched that he'd asked. He was after all House's best (and only) friend.
'I think I should probably be asking you that.' She responded.
He sighed. 'I'm ok. Just tired. The worst of it is over. At least we know he's going to wake up. Even if his leg doesn't heal.'
She nodded. 'Listen, there's something I wanted to ask you,' he looked at her enquiringly. 'Could you get in touch with Stacey Warner and tell her what's going on?'
He looked shocked, but didn't reply, so she continued:
'He's going to need someone when he wakes up. He won't want his parents with him, and you have to work. What if he wakes up alone?'
There was silence.
'You don't have to tell her about the ketamine. Tell her the truth: just say that he needs her.' She got up from her seat and headed to the door.
Finally he spoke: 'You're an extraordinary woman, Allison Cameron.' She could hear the admiration in his voice.
She turned back then and looked at him for a moment. He had never seen anyone look so sad and yet so proud at the same time. He knew she wouldn't welcome his pity.
'You know I'm not.' She said softly before she exited the room.
Yet sitting alone in his office, James Wilson couldn't help but feel that she was wrong. Only a truly extraordinary person would sacrifice their own chance at happiness for someone else. And in that moment he felt that House would be a fool if he chose a woman who had walked out on him and broken his heart over one who would break her own for the man she loved.
