So, I'm doing the "Inktober" writing prompts, so... here's one! This one's prompt was "Alone", so I came up with this :)
Mac gave a loud sigh. Terry and his mom were out and about - something about a football game and him being too young to come along - and he was at home. All by himself. The eight-year-old knew there was something wrong. There was no way that his mother, or (God forbid) Terrence would leave him alone for too long without someone else watching him. And yet…
It'd been nearly six hours since they had left. Mac knew that a "football game" wasn't that long. Oh no, he knew what was really going on. It was about Terrence's father. Apparently, Terrence wasn't even Mac's brother, but really a half-brother. Every weekend, his mother and Terrence would go to a "football game" to see his father. And after a weekend of being at the house by himself, they would come back. It was routine, really.
It wasn't often, but sometimes Mac would just go to Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (or Foster's, as he simply called it). It was more of a home to him than his own. Now that he thought about it, it had been a few days since he'd last seen Bloo. Mac let out a huff and walked out of the house. He locked the door behind him and began the fifteen-minute walk to Foster's.
The walk was uneventful, although he did meet a stray cat who let him hold her and she followed him to Foster's. The cat seemed to watch him as he walked up the steps to the house. He waved goodbye and rang the doorbell. Frankie answered it shortly after.
"Mac? What are you doing here? You don't usually come on the weekends," Frankie said in a suspicious tone, but he could hear the underlying worry coloring her voice.
"I," he started before he cleared his throat to try and move the lump that got there. "I'm gonna be home by myself for a bit, so I figured I'd stop by and say hi?"
"Mac, you always do that on the weekdays. How about you really tell me what's going on?"
"I've just been at home alone for a bit, no biggie."
"No biggie?! When I was your age, I was never left alone by myself!"
"Frankie…"
"Don't you 'Frankie' me! Have you always been by yourself on the weekends?"
"... you could say that, yeah."
Frankie deflated when she saw Mac's facial expression. It was clear he was hiding something, but something told her he would tell her later on.
"Alright, pal. Come on in. Bloo has been asking for you nonstop."
Mac's eyes lit up and he rushed up to hug her waist.
"Thank you, Frankie," he murmured into her left hip.
"What for?" Frankie asked back while playing with his hair.
"For being there. For not leaving me alone."
Frankie smiled before shooing the boy into the house.
And every weekend, Mac would stay over for the night. No one questioned it, nor could they find it in them to do so. He was part of their family, and family is never left behind.
Yeah yeah, it's short, but that's the idea ;). Hopefully, it wasn't too OOC...
Anyways, thirty more to go!
