It's cold as fuck outside the school and the kid's not even wearing a jacket. He's only three feet away, Dean can hear the occasional sharp intake of breath as he wraps his arms tighter around himself. Dean's got a cigarette between his lips and crushes the filter with his teeth as he uses both of his hands to shimmy out of his jacket. He toses it at him, the kid he sometimes sees in the hall, the leather smaking into his sholder and catching on his arm.
"Dean," Dean smirks, eyeing the boy as he takes another drag. "Think they still got a few more hours. You got a brother or sister playing?"
"My, uh, sister Anna. She's on the Freshman basketball team. I'm Castiel." He's embarrassed as he slips on the jacket, sleeves slipping past his fingers. It was so warm.
"Castiel? And I thought my buddy Rufus's name was bad." Dean chuckles. He leans over, offering the cigarette to Castiel.
Cas bites his lip and turns his head. "No thanks, I don't smoke."
"Huh, that so. Well then, I don't know about you, but now that the sun's down, I think I might be better off in my car. Feel free to join me if you want." Dean glances over at him.
Dean doesn't say anything about his coat, just lazily walks to his car. Cas had seen it in the school parking lot before, just like he'd seen Dean before. Dean was a year above him, if you could even say that with the amount of class he skipped. Cas also knew he was waiting on his younger brother Sam. He liked Sam. They talked in the library sometimes. He was very well read.
Castiel doesn't know what makes him do it, one second he's wondering why he isn't sitting at the bleachers watching Anna's game and the next, he's tapping at the passenger window of that sleek, black car and Dean's hitting the unlock button on the door, ushering him in.
When Castiel sits down, he knows automatically Dean's no longer smoking cigarettes. Marijuana. He'd heard of it, smelled it, passed by people smoking it. But never had it invaded him like it was now. It smelled earthy and mouthwatering and Cas is watching the way Dean's mouth covers the end of the joint and sucks, tip burning brightly in the dark.
Dean breathes out, smoke swirling and spreading along the inside of the car.
"Ever been stoned before?" Dean raises an eyebrow at him.
"No," Castiel admits, but when Dean hands him the joint, he takes it without second guessing himself. "But I'd very much like to try it."
It hurts his lungs but Cas kind of likes it, and at first he's embarassed that he coughs, but Dean waves it off and just tells him it's good, it'll make him more stoned. And Cas feels like he's floating. It's the best feeling he's ever exprienced. No pressure, no nagging thoughts, just the feeling of, well, feeling. Cas's eyes are practically burning when he and Dean step out of the car, the cold air feeling amazing in his lungs.
They sit on the trunk of the Impala, Cas knows because Dean talked about it for thirty minutes, staring up at the stars just visible past the street lamps.
"You think there's a God?" Castiel asks, his right knee touching Dean's left knee, his right pinkie edged just up against Dean's left pinkie.
"Mm, why not?" Dean snorts, moving his hand a little closer. "I think lots of things are possible."
