The Twilight world and all of its wonderful characters belong to the amazing Stephanie Meyer.

I Just wanted to write this short story about what Carlisle may do at the hospital in forks because we don't really get much of an insight about his job in the books.

Inspired by "How to save a life" – The Fray

Carlisle Pov

I got into my Mercedes and drove to work. I was in the hospital car park promptly at 7am. I walk casually into the ER and saw a few of the usual paranoid people scattered around the room as well as some of the regulars. Today was going to be just like any other day.

"Miss Franklin, How are you today? Have you been taking your medication like I told you to?" I conversed with the kindly old women from Danielson road, which was just around the corner for Forks community hospital.

"Yes, Dr Cullen, But breathing is still painful" She sounded very hoarse, but managed to laugh slightly. I laughed with her as I wheeled her into bay 4 and helped her onto the examining table. I took the stethoscope from around my neck and put the buds in my ears and listened to her heart, even though I didn't need a stethoscope to tell that her heart was 70 bpm, which was higher than the last time I examined her.

"Well, Connie, The main medication seems to be working. Your heart rate is levelling out to 70 beats per minute now, which is a vast improvement from the first time I saw you" I smiled at her. "Let's check your breathing. Please sit forward for me." I helped her lean forward, as she was an elderly human, and they need more care than the younger humans. I used the stethoscope to listen to her breathing. It was erratic and it was clear to me then that the surgery Dr. Lither performed last week didn't do the job. Her lung was in danger of collapsing again. Only I knew this though, as other doctors and nurses didn't have nearly well enough hearing to come to this conclusion.

"Connie, I'm afraid I don't like the sound of this." I put the stethoscope back around my neck and filled in a sheet on my clipboard.

"Dr. Cullen, I'm 89, I'm on my way out, can we stop having these check ups?"

I shook my head. I knew what she was saying.
"I have to do my duty" I smiled and continued filling in the sheet on my clipboard.

"You're an extremely kind man, doctor, but this is my choice. I wish to go home and go peacefully. I have no family, so what else is there for me. I've lived far past my sell by date. Let me go."

I didn't know what to say or to do. I contemplated all of the options I had her in less than a millisecond. She was far too aged as a human to become a vampire, but she was also too young to die for my liking. It was obvious what I must do, but I hated this option.

"Ill be right back, Connie, make yourself comfortable" I walked at a slow pace, even for a human it was slow. I walked up to Dr. Lither, who was behind the reception desk checking through some files.

"Steve…." He looked up at me.

"What's up, Carlisle?"

"Can you please take Miss Franklin into your own care, please?" I asked, hoping he would agree to with all of my non-beating heart.

"Sure, It's not like I have nothing else to do around here. Can you get all the addicted idiots out of the ER? We are not giving anyone any more drugs if they don't need them." He said as he took the clipboard out of my arms and headed back over to bay 4.
"Much obliged Steve, Thank you." I called back as he stepped into the bay.

I was partially relieved, but still worried. Just then I heard Dr Lither calling for help. I stood absolutely still as the nurses rushed past me.

I held my breath. Today truly was like any other day.
